Tuesday’s games
National League
Dodgers 9, Giants 8: Milton Bradley’s two-run single off Armando Benitez tied the game, left fielder Jason Ellison’s error on the play allowed the winning run to score, and the Los Angeles beat visiting San Francisco. The Giants led 8-5 entering the ninth, and Benitez (0-1) retired leadoff batter Jason Phillips on a grounder to short to start the inning. But pinch-hitter Ricky Ledee doubled and took third on Cesar Izturis’ single. After pinch-hitter Jose Valentin popped to first, J.D. Drew walked to load the bases. Jeff Kent drew another walk to force in a run, making it 8-6, and Bradley followed by lining a 2-2 pitch to left.
Nationals 4, Braves 3: New Braves closer Dan Kolb gave up three runs in the ninth, ruining a strong outing by Tim Hudson and helping visiting Washington rally for a victory at Atlanta. Brian Schneider hit a two-out, two-run double off Kolb. Cordero recorded his first save. Luis Ayala (1-0) got the win with a scoreless eighth. Hudson allowed only six hits in eight innings, handing the ball to Kolb with a 3-1 lead. He couldn’t hold it.
Pirates 4, Brewers 2: Mark Redman survived a shaky start and a line drive off his right kneecap, and Daryle Ward ended Pittsburgh’s homerless streak at 56 innings in the visiting Pirates’ win over Milwaukee. Redman (1-0) allowed his first two batters to score but settled down after that, allowing just three more hits – and five overall – with no walks and five strikeouts in six innings. Ward’s shot, just the second home run for the Pirates this season, followed the third of four singles by Rob Mackowiak.
Marlins 8, Phillies 2: A.J. Burnett threw 103 pitches and not one of them was ball four. Showing uncharacteristic control, Burnett pitched Florida’s third complete game of the season, and the offense came alive against perennial patsy Randy Wolf to beat Philadelphia at Miami. Burnett, who has averaged more than four bases on balls per nine innings in his career, didn’t walk a batter.

Orioles 7, Devil Rays 6: Sammy Sosa hit his 575th career homer and Larry Bigbie snapped an eighth-inning tie with a RBI single, helping Baltimore beat Tampa Bay at Petersburg, Fla. B.J. Ryan got the last four outs for Baltimore, earning his first save after giving up a triple and walk to begin the ninth.
Twins 5, Tigers 4: Shannon Stewart hit an RBI ground-rule double off Troy Percival with one out in the ninth inning, giving Minnesota the victory over visiting Detroit. It was the first earned run Percival (0-1) allowed in 40 1/3 career innings against the Twins. Juan Rincon (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth for the victory. Rookie Jason Bartlett hit his first major league homer and Cuddyer also went deep for Minnesota, which tied the game at 4 in the eighth against a shaky Ugueth Urbina.
