Ryan King singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to lift the Medical Lake Cardinals to an 8-7 victory and a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Riverside Rams in Great Northern League baseball action. Medical Lake won the opener 5-0.

In the second game, Riverside’s Taylor McMahon hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and the Rams (2-11, 1-10) scored three runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. John O’Conner had two hits and three runs batted in to lead the Cardinals (7-4, 5-4). Cory Cooper tossed a complete-game three-hitter, striking out 11, to carry Medical Lake to a win in the opener.

Elsewhere in GNL play, the Chewelah Cougars (9-3, 7-2) won a pair of road games over the Colville Indians (4-6, 4-6). A.J. Proszek doubled in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the sixth inning and Michael McCanna surrendered just three hits in a complete-game effort as Chewelah won the opener 2-1. Proszek delivered from the mound in the second game, tossing a complete-game three-hitter, striking out 14 on the way, to lead the Cougars to a 6-0 win. Proszek went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to aid his cause.

Softball

The Colville Indians remained unbeaten in Great Northern League play with a home sweep over the last-place Deer Park Stags (1-11, 0-6). Jordan Emmil drove in six runs, two coming on a first-inning home run, and the Indians (11-1, 6-0) rolled to a 25-2 win in the first game, called after three innings because of the mercy rule. Emmil’s two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth ended the second game in Colville’s favor, 11-1. … In other GNL action, Medical Lake (3-6, 2-2) swept a doubleheader from the visiting Lakeside Eagles (2-7, 1-5). Charlotte Psick‘s three-run double came during an eight-run outburst in the top of the 10th to lift the Cardinals to a 12-7 win in the opener. Psick smacked a two-out two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to give Medical Lake a 7-6 win in the nightcap.

Boys soccer

Andrew Smith scored the only goal that keeper Jared Massey would need just 3 minutes into the match as the Medical Lake Cardinals edged the visiting Riverside Rams 1-0 in Great Northern League play. Massey made five saves to notch the shutout. … Elsewhere in the GNL, Nick DeGraffenreid scored four goals, three in the first half, and the visiting Pullman Greyhounds romped to a 9-0 win over the Lakeside Eagles at Nine Mile Falls. … Brett Andreaz had a goal and four assists to lead the visiting Deer Park Stags to a 5-0 win over the Chewelah Cougars.
