Beavers sweep Cougars

The Spokesman-Review

The Washington State Cougars baseball team is running out of chances to get in the Pacific-10 Conference win column.

The ninth-ranked Oregon State Beavers (30-7, 9-3) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 7-6 victory and a doubleheader sweep on Sunday at Coleman Stadium in Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers cruised to an 8-1 win over the Cougars (18-23, 0-12) in the opener.

In the nightcap, WSU overcame a 4-0 deficit and took a 6-4 lead when Jeff Miller’s two-run single capped a four-run eighth inning. But Cougars reliever Travis Webb (0-5) coughed up the lead in the bottom of the inning, surrendering a three-run double to Andy Jenkins.

In the first game, Oregon State starter Anton Maxwell allowed just one hit in nine innings, a solo home run by Brady Everett to run his record to 7-0 on the season.

•John Hester led off the second inning with a home run to start the 24th-ranked Stanford Cardinal (24-14, 7-5) off and running to a 6-3 victory and a three-game Pac-10 series sweep over the visiting Washington Huskies (24-17, 4-8).

Matt Hague hit his sixth home run of the season for Washington, a two-run shot in the top of the seventh.

•The Whitworth Pirates (18-11, 13-8) jumped out to a huge lead and then hung on for an 11-7 win and a sweep of the three-game series over the visiting Puget Sound Loggers (11-21, 4-17) in Northwest Conference play.

Jason Martin’s three-run home run and a solo homer by Nick Froman helped the Pirates take an 11-0 lead through six innings. Meanwhile, Whitworth starter Ben McCracken (4-3) took a shutout into the eighth inning before running into trouble.

Martin finished 4 for 4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored for the Whits.

Softball

Jo Sonnett and Alana Klaus both fired shutouts and won by identical 6-0 scores as the Whitworth Pirates (23-14, 18-8) ended the Northwest Conference season by sweeping the visiting Lewis & Clark Pioneers (2-34, 1-27).

Sonnett allowed just four hits and struck out eight in winning the opener. Klaus, Amanda Norwood and Lindsay Davis hit home runs. It was the first three-homer game in school history.

Klaus allowed just three singles, striking out 12 en route to the victory in the second game.

The back-to-back shutouts gave Whitworth a school-record 14 shutouts on the season.
