Winningest boys coach retiring
FORT WORTH, Texas – The nation’s all-time winningest boys basketball coach is calling it quits after 47 seasons and 1,333 victories.
Robert Hughes, coach at Fort Worth Dunbar, announced his retirement plans Monday.
“It’s time to do the Ray Charles. I’m going to hit the road, Jack,” the 76-year-old coach said. “I’m in great health, I’ve been doing this for 47 years. It’s time to take a walk.”
Hughes surpassed Morgan Wooten of DeMatha Catholic in Maryland in 2003 as the leader in career victories. Ron Bradley of Port St. Joe in Florida is the closest among active coaches to Hughes’ mark with 948 victories.
