Newport advances to state title game

Chris Wise drove in three runs with a pair of hits, and Newport advanced to the championship game of the Junior American Legion state tournament with a 10-7 victory over Prairie on Tuesday in Chehalis, Wash.

Josh Tiede and Taylor McMahon each drove in two runs for Newport, which worked its way to the title game through the losers’ bracket.

Newport must beat Richland twice today to advance to the regional tournament in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Kennewick eliminated West Valley 12-2 in a loser-out game.

•Lakeside Recovery handed Curtis its first loss of the Junior ‘A’ American Legion tournament 7-2 in a semifinal matchup at Al K. Jackson Field.

Curtis still advanced to today’s title game, where it will face the winner of the Lakeside-Ridgefield game.

Ridgefield eliminated Yakima 6-4 in the other semifinal game.

Golf

A Cougar, a Vandal and two Huskies advanced to match play after the second round of stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the Settingdown Creek course of the Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Ga.

Former Washington State standout Kim Welch shot a second-round 3-over-par 75 to finish tied for 19th place with a two-round total of 147.

Idaho’s Renee Skidmore finished tied for 50th after a 77 left her with a two-round total of 152.

Washington’s Paige Mackenzie (146, tied for 15th) and Amber Prange (151, tied for 42nd) also advanced.

Mead grad and Cougar-to-be Amy Eneroth (76-156), WSU’s Anastasia Kostina (79-156) and UW’s Kim Shin (82-165) failed to advance.
