Rookie Kyle Orton brought a breath of fresh air to the often-stale Chicago Bears offense.

Orton riddled Miami’s third-string defense on two late touchdown drives, lifting the Bears past the Dolphins 27-24 in the Hall of Fame game Monday night in Canton, Ohio.

The fourth-round draft pick from Purdue connected with Carl Ford for a 43-yard score with 7:23 remaining. After Olindo Mare was short on a 54-yard field goal try, Orton guided Chicago 56 yards, keyed by a 34-yard bullet to Eddie Berlin and a third-down interference penalty by Miami’s Deandre Eiland.

Zack Abron ran it in from the 4 to put the Bears on top.

Orton’s strong performance – 7 for 11 for 175 yards – spoiled the debut of Nick Saban as an NFL coach and Ricky Williams’ return to the Miami lineup. And the Bears got another stellar showing from a rookie, second-round pick Mark Bradley. The former Oklahoma receiver had a Hall of Fame game-record 131 yards on five receptions.

Williams finished with eight yards on five carries.

Law signs with Jets

Ty Law agreed to a contract with the Jets, giving New York a Pro Bowl cornerback who helped the New England Patriots win three Super Bowls.

The deal for the free agent was contingent on a physical, scheduled for the afternoon at the team’s training camp.

“And if everything goes well, he’ll be a New York Jet,” coach Herman Edwards said.

Westbrook ends holdout

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook ended his weeklong holdout and reported to training camp.

Westbrook has been holding out for a long-term contract after signing a one-year restricted free agent offer for $1.43 million earlier this off-season.

Vikings sign first-rounder

The Minnesota Vikings reached a contract agreement with holdout rookie defensive end Erasmus James, a first-round draft pick from Wisconsin.

The 18th overall selection, James was expected to be on the field for practice today after missing the first 10 days of training camp.

Jets-Giants feud continues

Giants linebacker Barrett Green is still seeing red from Saturday’s brawl against the New York Jets, and can’t wait for the rematch on Aug. 26.

“There’s going to be a lot of animosity, you can count on that,” Green said. “They’re going to get hit – hard.”

Saturday’s joint practice with the Jets turned into a free-for-all when three Jets jumped Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey on the second play of a 9-on-7 drill.
