Prep opener date changed

The Spokesman-Review

The date for the Lake City at University season-opening high school football game has been changed.

Originally scheduled for Sept. 1, the game will now be played a night earlier. The date was changed to avoid conflicting with the Idaho-Washington State University game in Pullman on Sept. 1, Lake City coach Van Troxel said.

Troxel asked U-Hi coach Mike Ganey if the game could be moved to Sept. 2, but that would have cut into U-Hi’s preparation time for its second game.

“Aug. 31 works out best for both teams because it will shorten up the preseason preparation in dealing with two-a-days and give both teams more time to prepare for their second game,” Troxel said.

Basketball

Gonzaga University junior Adam Morrison was one of 50 players selected as a preseason candidate for the 2005-06 John R. Wooden Award.

In mid-January, the Wooden Award committee will pare the list to 30 and on March 28, the 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. The men’s and women’s individual award winners will be announced on April 8.

Hockey

Spokane Chiefs athletic therapist Darcy Bishop has been named the athletic therapist for Canada’s National Junior Championship team. The Calgary, Allberta, native has worked for the Chiefs for the past four seasons. The World Junior Hockey Championships begin Jan. 5.
