Mitchell Palmquist attains Eagle Scout

Mitchell Palmquist of Spokane recently earned his Eagle Scout award. The award is the highest one given in the Boy Scouts. For his project Palmquist built a storage shed for the House of Charity. Palmquist, a student at University High School, is a member of Troop 420.

•Jeffrey Ball recently completed a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the Fox Chase Center in Philadelphia. Ball is a 1978 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and a graduate of Temple University Medical School. The son of Bev and Milo Ball of Spokane, Ball has joined a private oncology practice in Brooklyn, N.Y.

•Elaine Green, who graduated from the University of Idaho in May with a master’s degree in fine arts, was recently selected to have her artwork in the 2005 Idaho Triennial Exhibition at the UI Prichard Art Gallery through in Moscow, Oct. 1. More than 1,200 entries were submitted and 27 artists were chosen for the juried exhibition. Green’s selected pieces, both drawings in charcoal, are “Unhomelike 8” and “Unhomelike 9.” Green is of Spokane and St. Maries

• Several area students have been awarded scholarships for the 2005-06 school year by the Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation. Their hometowns or high schools are listed.

•Patrick Perry of Ferris High School was recently awarded the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award sponsored by Montsanto Co. Perry, the son of Sheryl and Mark Hammons and Ray Perry, was given the honor in recognition of his academic achievements, leadership and agricultural work.

•Four area students have been named to the spring dean’s list at the University of Oregon. They are: Stephanie Bobiak and Karlin Gray, Spokane; Nicholas Erikson, Liberty Lake; and Nichole Lovrich, Pullman.

•Air Force Airman Brent Meyers has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Meyers, a 2004 graduate of Lakeside High School, is the son of Edwin Meyers of Nine Mile Falls.

•John Ide has been promoted to the rank of colonel in the Air Force. He works as the director of international affairs at the Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Ide is the son of John Ide of Spokane and Kuniko Ide of Hawaii.

•Mikayla Fullmer of Spokane has been awarded the Grace Moyer Scholarship at the Wheaton Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She is a 2002 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

•Army Pvt. Steven Allen recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. Allen is the son of Robert Cole Jr. of Mead.

•Two area residents recently graduated from the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis, Wash.

John Zver, the son of John Zver Jr. of Spokane, is a 2002 graduate of St. Michael’s Academy. He is currently attending the University of Washington.

Yoshinobu Hara, the son of Nobumichi and Jane Hara of Spokane, is currently attending Eastern Washington University.

•Two area students were recognized for their outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service by the University of Idaho College of Science. They are: Tyrel Johnson, Laclede, Idaho, Outstanding Senior in Mathematics; Matthew Petersen, Moscow, Idaho, Outstanding Senior in Mathematics.

•Several University of Idaho students spent the summer as interns at various NASA centers around the country. The program is sponsored by the NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium. The students are: Danielle Ator, Coeur d’Alene; Matt Braley, Troy, Idaho; Kevin Buck, Pullman; Kent Crossin, Moscow; John Lacy, Post Falls; and Jessica Poindexter, Cheney.

•Kathryn Dean of Coeur d’Alene was named to the spring dean’s list at Denison University in Ohio. Dean, a 2003 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, is the daughter of Jeanne and Charles Dean of Coeur d’Alene.

•Shasta Hankins, a May graduate of the University of Idaho’s department of Theatre and Film, was recently named the national winner of Mehron Award for Excellence in Makeup Design, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The national award for student designers is based on quality and originality. With the award comes a tuition grant of $5,000 to attend a course at the Makeup Designory in Los Angeles. Hankins, from Sandpoint, is a 2005 graduate of the University of Idaho.

•Spokane Valley resident Kevin Doyle, the food services director at the Lakeland School District in Rathdrum, Idaho, has been certified as a food service management professional by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Doyle, who holds a degree from the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, is under contract with Chartwells K-12 School Dining Services.
