Writers, illustrators of children’s books plan summit

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is presenting a conference Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort in Worley, Idaho. Seminar topics will include “The Art of Picture Books,” “An Inside Look at Publishing,” “Nonfiction Rocks” and more.

Auditions

Open auditions for “Nunsense II: The Second Coming” will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at CenterStage, 1017 W. First Ave. If necessary, auditions will continue next Sunday at 6 p.m.

Needed are three women, age 18 to 50, to play Sisters Robert Anne, Mary Paul (Amnesia) and Merry Leo. Auditioners should be prepared to sing a selection of their choice (up to 3 minutes; pianist provided) and perform a short monologue (up to 2 minutes). They also may be asked to improvise.

The show will run Oct. 7 through Nov. 18. Cast members will be paid. For more information, call 747-8243.

•Auditions for the Northwest Sacred Music Chorale will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 521 Lakeside, Coeur d’Alene.

•The Lilac City Symphony Orchestra will start its new season Sept. 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway Ave.

Seeking volunteers

The Lake City Playhouse, 1320 E. Garden Ave., Coeur d’Alene, is looking for volunteers to help with concessions, the box office, poster distribution and more.

The next opportunity to volunteer will be at Friday’s performance of “America’s Most Wanted – Kids.” Volunteers will need to arrive at 6 p.m. and will get free admission to the show.

Kudos

“Amsterdam,” a transparent watercolor painting by JoAnne Nixon of Spokane, has been accepted for the juried National Watercolor West Exhibition.

The painting will be displayed from Sept. 10 through Oct. 23 at the Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, Calif.

Classes and workshops

Spokane Authors and Self-Publishers is sponsoring a workshop designed to prepare authors for radio and television interviews.

Ruth Dixon, author of “Songs From the Girl Back Home,” will speak Sept. 1 at noon at the Old Country Buffet, 5504 N. Division St. Dixon is a writer who worked in radio and television in San Francisco after World War II.

Authors and poets who attend should bring their own work to display at the meeting. Admission is free, but those attending are required to buy lunch.
