Athletics 9, Tigers 2: At Detroit, Kirk Saarloos pitched seven scoreless innings and was backed by four home runs as Oakland beat the Tigers.
Devil Rays 13, Indians 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Tampa Bay’s Seth McClung won his third straight start and Travis Lee drove in four runs as the Devil Rays stopped Cleveland’s six-game winning streak.
White Sox 6, Twins 4: At Minneapolis, Carl Everett homered and drove in four runs, Mark Buehrle scattered six hits over eight innings and Chicago beat Minnesota to snap a four-game losing streak to the Twins.
Blue Jays 9, Yankees 5: At New York, Vernon Wells hit a three-run homer off Mike Mussina in a nine-run fifth inning, and Toronto beat the Yankees.
Royals 4, Red Sox 3 (11): At Kansas City, Mo., Chip Ambres’ sacrifice fly drove in David DeJesus with the winning run with one out in the 11th, lifting the Royals to a victory over Boston.
National League
Braves 3, Cubs 1: At Chicago, Rafael Furcal hit a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning to capitalize on Mark Prior’s error, and Atlanta rallied to beat the Cubs.
Cardinals 8, Pirates 3: At Pittsburgh, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa tied Sparky Anderson for third place on baseball’s managerial wins list with his 2,194th career victory as St. Louis beat the Pirates. Only Connie Mack (3,731) and John McGraw (2,763) have won more games.
Nationals 5, Reds 3: At Washington, John Patterson scattered 10 hits over 8 1/3 innings, working out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh, to lead the Nationals to a victory over Cincinnati.
Brewers 6, Marlins 4: At Milwaukee, rookie Rickie Weeks drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the sixth inning and the Brewers took advantage of four Florida errors in a victory.
Rockies 2, Dodgers 1: At Los Angeles, Aaron Miles and Matt Holliday hit run-scoring doubles in the eighth to snap a scoreless tie, and Colorado beat the Dodgers for its 15th road victory of the season.
Mets 18, Diamondbacks 4: At Phoenix, David Wright and Mike Jacobs both hit two home runs and Jacobs and Jose Reyes each had four RBIs as New York pounded Arizona for a second straight night.
Padres 7, Astros 4: At San Diego, Trevor Hoffman earned his 425th save to take sole possession of second place on the career list and the Padres beat Houston to climb back to .500.
Phillies 7, Giants 4: At San Francisco, Bobby Abreu had three hits and drove in two runs, and Philadelphia maintained its lead in the wild-card race with a victory over the Giants.
