Chiefs post shootout win
SWIFT CURRENT, Saskatchewan – The Swift Current Broncos found out the hard way what not to do against the Spokane Chiefs – face them in a shootout.
Chris Bruton, the seventh Chiefs skater in the shootout, scored on a forehand shot over the glove of Broncos goalie Kyle Moir and Chiefs goalie Thomas Stehr made a kick-save on Jeremy Schenderling’s shot to lift the Chiefs to a 3-2 win over the Broncos in Western Hockey League play at the Centennial Civic Centre on Sunday. Spokane is 3-0 in shootouts.
Josh Aspenlind staked Swift Current (9-15-1-6) to a 1-0 lead with a goal at 3:08 of the first period.
Joe Logan pulled the Chiefs even at the 1:40 mark of the second period with a power-play goal.
The Broncos retook the lead with 1:48 left in the game on a goal by Daniel Rakos, but the Chiefs rallied.
Spokane pulled Stehr for an extra skater and the gamble paid off when Adam Hobson put a rebound into the net to knot the score at 2 with 1:05 left.
After a scoreless overtime, Chad Klassen and Derek Ryan scored on the Chiefs’ first two shootout tries. Kyle Bortis and Ned Lukacevic duplicated the feat for the Broncos, but the next four skaters on each side missed, setting the stage for Bruton.
Spokane improves to 13-13-1-0 on the season.
