Four Scouts receive Silver Award

Four area girls recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award for completing community service projects.

Leah Horton, a student at Mead Middle School, taught outdoor skills to a Brownie troop. She is the daughter of Laura Martinia and John Horton.

Cynthia Cree, a student at Glover Middle School, organized a children’s choir at her church. She is the daughter of Steve and Kathy Cree.

Shannon Miller, a student at Central Valley High School, helped run a vacation Bible school last summer. She is the daughter of Gary and Tami Barnes.

Christine Logerwell, a student at Central Valley High School, worked with younger girls to finish their Girl Scout bridging requirements. She is the daughter of Richard and Laurine Logerwell.

“ Several area students were recently awarded scholarships at Gonzaga University funded by the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation of Modesto, Calif. The scholarships are given to full-time juniors, seniors and graduate students who have at least a 3.0 grade-point average and financial need. Students are nominated for the award, which can be renewed.

Recipients are Jasdeep Kaur-Gill, Terrie McCormick and Christopher Wheatley, all of Spokane. Previous recipients who had their scholarships renewed include Linda Axtell of Valley, Wash., Jessica Mayer of Genessee, Idaho, and Susanne Nicholas of Spokane.

“ Two area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Airman First Class James Madnick, a 2002 graduate of Medical Lake High School, is the son of James and Vicki Madnick of Medical Lake.

Airman Donald Moran, the son of Patricia Moran of Deer Park, is a 1997 graduate of Deer Park High School.

“ Army National Guard Pfc. Terrence Bower recently graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. Bower, the son of Robert Bower of Deer Park, is a 1992 graduate of Phillips Junior College.

“ Army Pfc. Timothy Pillers recently graduated from basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. Pillers, a 2002 graduate of Rogers High School, is the son of Don Pillers of Spokane.

“ A Gonzaga University mock trial team recently placed seventh in the Middle Tennessee State University Mock Trial Invitational Tournament. The tournament included 66 teams, and the team ended with a 6-2 record. Team members include Cory Campbell, Gina Cervino, Dan McGivern, Jill Quinn, Kate Scordato, Matt Shoop and Forrest Smith.

Idaho

Andrew Enriquez, a student at North Idaho College who is a reporter for the student-run newspaper, The Sentinal, recently earned an honorable mention in the National Reporter of the Year competition at the National Collegiate Press convention in Kansas City. The Sentinal’s adviser, Nils Rosdahl, was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Community College Journalism Association. The Sentinal also won a Pacemaker Award, which is awarded for general excellence in college newspapers. The paper was one of five community college newspapers to win the award this year.

“ Mallory Cook, a senior at Coeur d’Alene High School, was recently awarded a $1,000 Principal’s Leadership Scholarship. Each high school in the country is allowed to nominate one student for the award. Cook was one of 150 recipients chosen from more than 5,400 applicants.

“ Wayne Gunter, director of the East Bonner County Library District, was recently awarded the 2005 Librarian Award by the New York Times. The award is given to 27 librarians every year based on outstanding public service and nominations are submitted by the general public. Each winner receives a plaque and $2,500. Gunter has worked for the East Bonner County district for more than 30 years.
