Helmet Outlet moves to bigger digs

Items for people who ride motocross, all-terrain vehicles, street and touring bikes, and snowmobiles have grown so much in popularity that the Helmet Outlet store has moved to its own larger quarters at 5648 N. Government Way. Now located on an acre about a block north of the fairgrounds, the six-year-old business moved from 9551 Government Way.

When owner Mike Murphy moved into the new place, he discovered the former discount grocery tenant had left literally tons of nonperishable food items, which Murphy is donating to area food banks. The building was refurbished for his business.

Helmet Outlet sells all types of protective gear for all parts of the body, and accessories and team-oriented items such as jerseys. Items are from 20 manufacturers.

Originally from Detroit, Murphy came to North Idaho from Pocatello about 20 years ago. He has seven employees and the Web site of www.helmetoutletusa.com. The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 9 to 5 Saturdays and 9 to 2 Sunday through Christmas. The grand opening with special sales, snacks and free massages is Dec. 17. Phone 762-3668.

Dental specialists build on Hanley

An 18,000-square-foot building that will house several North Idaho dental specialists is under construction at 509 W. Hanley Ave. The three-level facility is just off Hanley’s northeast corner at Mineral Drive and west of Highway 95.

Owners are dentists Dr. Dan Davidson and Dr. Tim Penberthy, whose practices will occupy two suites. Other occupants will be Dr. Anne Schmitt, moving her oral surgery practice from Lincoln Way, and Dr. Bryan Dryden, moving his general dental practice from Ironwood Drive.

Originally from Bend, Ore., Davidson was educated at the University of Idaho and Oregon Health Sciences Center and did his residency at the University of Washington. He came here in 1983 and is moving his practice from Third Street.

Penberthy was raised in Great Falls and educated at Montana State University, the University of Minnesota and Boston University. At the latter he studied endodontics (root canals). He came to North Idaho in 1987 and is moving his practice from Ironwood Drive.

The building should open in late January and will occupy two of the three acres Davidson and Penberthy own. Spaces of 720 and 2,300 square feet remain available. Contact Jim Coon at Coldwell Banker Realty.

Cheapskates opens on Sherman

“Variety” is the key word for this discount store that opened last week in a 5,000-square-foot space at 1116 Sherman Ave., Coeur d’Alene. The store has retail and wholesale nonperishable groceries, health and beauty aids, small appliances, clothing, shoes, jewelry, seasonal stuff and even furniture.

“It mostly comes from returns, slightly damaged goods, overruns and salvages,” said Mike McCoy, who owns the business with Russ Cousins. They also have two stores in Tri-Cities, and one in Battleground, Wash. McCoy originally is from Huntington, W. Va., and Cousins is from Oregon. They have three employees here.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Phone 665-0671.
