The conference has not impressed on the national scene thus far, with a trio of struggling teams that had expected to play well. Top on that list is Stanford, picked by some to finish first in the conference. But even with top scorer Dan Grunfeld back from last year’s knee injury, the Cardinal has lost by 16 to UC Irvine, by 19 to Montana, and by 14 to UC Davis. … Oregon, which returns a talented roster, has looked soft in losses to Georgetown (by 14) in Eugene and to Illinois (by 30) in Portland. … Arizona, the most common preseason pick to win the conference, is 4-3, including a loss at Houston and an ugly home win against Saint Mary’s. … This could mean a wide-open race, although, based on early returns, Washington and UCLA could emerge as the teams to beat. … Senior guard Hassan Adams, the leading scorer for No. 24 Arizona, will be in the starting lineup Saturday at Utah despite being arrested last weekend and cited for disturbing the peace.
