Mead topples U-Hi to extend meet streak

Highly-touted Mead placed three girls in the top five all-around and came out on top in a Greater Spokane League gymnastics meet at Mead.

The Panthers, who finished ahead of runner-up University by 3.1 points, kept alive a league winning streak that dates back to the 2003-04 season.

Ashley Dotson led Mead by almost sweeping every event. The junior scored first in the balance beam, floor exercise and vault, and finished second in the uneven bars on her way to the all-around title.

U-Hi’s Kayla McGahey placed runner-up in the all-around after a win in the bars and second place scores in the beam and vault.

Third- and fourth-place finishes went to Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) and Rogers, respectively.

Elsewhere, Lindsey Haney and Kaysha Bowton came through with strong all-around performances in Ferris’ 149.275-141.2 win over visiting Lewis and Clark. Haney, the winner in the beam and floor events, also captured the all-around title with a score of 32.15. Bowton won the vault and finished second to Haney in the floor, beam and all-around.

Wrestling

Despite heading into the final match down 36-35, Cheney was able to squeak out a 41-36 Greater Spokane League win over Mt. Spokane via Austin Miller’s pin of Wes Reasor at the 2:19 mark. Miller, wrestling in the 152-pound class, earned the victory in his first varsity meet. The Blackhawks also received pins from Keith Parker (160), Brendon Parker-Risk (125), Tim Klippert (130), and freshman Jason Skjothaug (135). … Also in GSL action, Central Valley won 11 of 13 matches in a 50-9 pounding of Ferris. Luke Cheser, the Bears’ returning state champ in the 140-pound class, pinned his opponent in 1:36. … Mike Malsam picked up a big win for University in a 56-18 defeat of Lewis and Clark. Malsam blanked much-seen opponent Trevor Powell 7-0. … East Valley won the first four matches and never looked back in a 59-3 stomping of Shadle Park at EV. Andrew Thatcher (135), Tyler Jolley (275), and Kyler Hunter (103) recorded pins for the Knights….Clarkston received pins from Matt Babino (112), Alex Barnham (135), Nate Sullivan (140), Wes Braun (189), Frank Willis (215) and Matt Olson (275) in its 51-18 dismantling of visiting West Valley.

Boys basketball

Zack Deines scored a game-high 15 points to help visiting Post Falls push past Lakeside 56-48 in a non-league contest at Nine Mile Falls. Kyle Turpin and Dan Hamilton contributed with 10 points apiece for the Trojans (3-2, 0-1). Jeff Harrington tossed in a team-high 13 for the Eagles (1-1). … Jason Azzarito and Brandon Holibaugh scored 18 points apiece for Kettle Falls in a 59-45 non-league win over visiting Medical Lake. Azzarito hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter for the Bulldogs (5-1), and Holibaugh shot 8 of 13 from the field. Nicholas Wheeler (17) and Kevin Broadnax (15) combined to score 32 of the Cardinals’ (1-2) 45 points.

Girls basketball

Post Falls almost let a 13-point halftime lead slip away, but held on for a 44-41 non-league win over host Lakeside at Nine Mile Falls. The Trojans had a team-high nine points from Heather Arnone and Jenney McVeigh on their way to building a healthy 29-16 lead at the break. Kellie Cummings and Kendall Erickson hit big shots from the 3-point line down the stretch, but the Eagles’ comeback attempt fell short as time expired. … Stifling first-quarter defense allowed Medical Lake to post a 71-42 non-league win at Kettle Falls. Richelle Daily led the Cardinals (3-0) with 16 points, while Desirea Goddard and Colleen Constantine threw in 15 and 12, respectively. Liz Beardslee recorded a double-double for KF (1-3), with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Men’s basketball

The game between North Idaho College and Community Colleges of Spokane, suspended after one half on Tuesday at Post Falls because of a muddy court, has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at NIC.

Admission to the rescheduled game will be free and the game will be replayed in its entirety.
