Mitchell, Summers each record double-doubles in Vandals’ victory

Leilani Mitchell scored 21 points to go with 11 assists, six rebounds and four steals, and Jessica Summers added 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead Idaho to a 79-70 non-conference women’s basketball victory Wednesday night over Portland State at the Cowan Spectrum in Moscow.

Emily Faurholt led the Vandals (4-6) in scoring with 25 points on 11-of-22 shooting.

Brianna Thompson led the Vikings (6-5) with 31 points, on 11-of-24 shooting, and 14 rebounds. Kelsey Kahle chipped in with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

•Mandy Troutt scored 18 points as Walla Walla routed Seattle 87-39 on the first day of the Bigfoot Classic at Spokane Community College. The host Community Colleges of Spokane (8-5) will face Seattle today at 2 p.m. in their Classic opener.

Men’s basketball

Joel Ryman (Northwest Christian) scored 19 points to lead four CC Spokane players in double figures as the Sasquatch defeated visiting Seattle 72-67 on the first day of the Bigfoot Classic at SCC.

Jordan Hammond had 13 points and seven rebounds, Erik Bell added 12 points and 10 boards, and Jeremy Mangum had 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals to lead a balanced CCS effort.

In Wednesday’s other game, Highline defeated Walla Walla 89-83. Mike Dorr (Mt. Spokane) led Highline with 18 points.

Wrestling

North Idaho College has nine individuals ranked and the team checked in at No. 1 in the first NJCAA wrestling poll.

The Cardinals, unbeaten in duals this season, were followed by Iowa Central, Labette, Colby and Northwest Wyoming. Region 18 rival Lassen is No. 8.

Sophomore Jake Kallestad is ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds. Other Cardinals in the rankings: Jeff Hedges, No. 2 at 125; Cody Nicholson, No. 8 at 133; Heinrich Barnes, No. 3 at 141; Jake Friedman, No. 7 at 157; Josh Erickson, No. 3 at 165; Nick Wright, No. 6 at 174; Josh Edmondson, No. 2 at 184; and Robby Shaw, No. 3 at 285.

Track and field

Northern Arizona’s women and Weber State’s men are favored to win the 2006 Big Sky Conference indoor track and field championships in a vote of league coaches.

EWU was picked fifth in the men’s race and eighth in the women’s race.
