Verizon awards grants to area nonprofit groups

The Verizon Foundation recently awarded grants to nonprofit organizations in North Idaho and Eastern Washington to aid in the advancement of community technology and work force development.

North Idaho recipients are listed.

The Coeur d’Alene Public Library received $7,200 to create a Career/Employment Database to provide computer access to work force development materials at the library or from home via the library’s Web site. The database will provide online access to courses and sample tests, including tests for GEDs, citizenship, SATs and the Armed Forces vocational aptitude battery.

Lake City Senior Center was awarded $3,500 for the Connecting Seniors program to provide on-site computers and training to those age 60 and over.

North Idaho College Foundation received $7,500 for a Digital Distance Classroom in the new North Idaho College Health and Sciences facility in Coeur d’Alene. Funds will be used to equip the classroom with state-of-the art digital instruction technology to serve on-site students with the ability to link students to on-line classes.

United Way of Moscow/Latah County was awarded $2,000 to upgrade its computer system to allow better interface between United Way and the agencies they support.

The University of Idaho will apply their $5,558 grant to the Teaching Engineering to Children (TECH): Mars Rover Challenge program. The TECH goal is to excite fifth- and sixth-grade students about math, science and engineering, provide opportunities for students to enhance their skills in teamwork and communication, and increase student interest at an early age in math, science and engineering careers.
