Donald Olmstead

Northport, Wash.

Funeral for Donald F. Olmstead, 69, will be today at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colville, with graveside service and vault interment at the Forest Home Cemetery in Northport.

Mr. Olmstead, a 57-year resident of Northport, died Tuesday.

Born in Spokane, he spent his early years in the Onion Creek area near Colville, where he attended Onion Creek grade school. He moved with his family to Northport and graduated in 1953 from Northport High School.

Mr. Olmstead began a career in the logging industry before he finished high school. Following high school he in the mining industry for a few years. He worked in several mines in Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado.

In 1955 he married Charlotte Pierce in Northport and settled there.

He returned to the logging industry and worked with the Lotze family, Brauner’s Lumber for 17 years and Vaagen’s Lumber Co. for 12 years. He enjoyed owning Olmstead Logging and was forced to retire at the onset of brain cancer.

His wife died in 2000.

On Oct. 30, he married longtime friend, Margaret Schaller.

Mr. Olmstead was a pilot and was a partner in the Colville Wings Flying Club and was a member of the Washington Pilots Association for many years.

He enjoyed traveling, snow mobiling, snow skiing and flying.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Donna Godes of Northport, Cathy LeCaire of Colville and Cindy Davis of Newport; a stepdaughter, Debbie Daniels of Deer Park; a stepson, Bob Schaller of Kingman, Ariz.; a brother, Jim Olmstead of Northport; a sister, Joyce Look of Rolla, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Northport Medical Clinic.

Bonnie Galland

Spokane

Viewing for Bonnie Galland, 74, will be today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Galland died Jan. 30. She was born in Colville and grew up on a dairy farm six miles north of Colville. After graduating from high school in Colville, she worked in a hair salon for two years. She also was employed on the dairy farm, feeding calves and taking care of the equipment.

She later moved to Spokane, where she worked as a beautician. In 1951 she married Lawrence Galland and lived on a farm south of Spokane for 42 years.

Mrs. Galland enjoyed fishing, cooking, rock hunting for agates, gardening, raising calves and taking trips.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Donna Hicks of Colville; a son, David Galland of Spokane; a sister, Harriet Headrick, and a brother, Ken Balis, both of Colville; and two grandsons.

William Sieg

Hartline, Wash.

Service for William Sieg, 85, was Saturday at the Hartline Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Sieg, who was born in Hartline, died Tuesday.

A lifelong resident of Hartline, he graduated in 1938 from Hartline High School.

He married Dorothy Scheibner in 1941 in Coulee City.

Mr. Sieg was a longtime wheat farmer and cattle rancher.

He was a member of the Hartline Assembly of God Church, Grant County Cattlemen’s Association, Washington Association of Wheat Growers, Flying Farmers, Grant County Fair and Cemetery District boards and was a longtime Hartline 4-H leader. He also was a member of Soap Lake Hospital District board.

His wife died in 1999.

Survivors include five children, William Sieg of Everett, George Sieg of Ridgecrest, Calif., Gary and Robert Sieg, both of Hartline, and Jean Cook of Colbert; a brother, Ralph Sieg of Bremerton; two sisters, Pauline Dingman of Hartline and Luella Bowen of Spokane; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hartline Cemetery or the Hartline Fire Department.

Russell Helgeson

Spokane

Private service will be held for Russell Helgeson, 75. Neptune Society handled the arrangements.

Mr. Helgeson died Tuesday. He was born in Wenatchee and grew up in Cashmere, where he graduated from Cashmere High School in 1947. In 1952 he graduated from the School of Pharmacy at Washington State University.

Following graduation, he married D. Jean Schmitten.

He entered the Air Force as a lieutenant and was stationed in Austin, Texas, working as a pharmacist in the Air Force Hospital for two years.

He returned to Spokane, where he owned Shadle Park Pharmacy for 36 years.

Mr. Helgeson was an Eagle Scout. He was a member of Acacia Fraternity, Washington State Pharmacy Board, YMCA Board and Whitworth Presbyterian Church.

He enjoyed skiing, boating and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Ann Hoppen and Joy Vesterman; a son, Russ Helgeson Jr.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials contributions may be made to Whitworth Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Spokane.

William Stanhope

Spokane

Graveside service for William F. Stanhope, 78, will be today at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Cemetery in Clayton, Wash. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stanhope, who was born in Brownville, Maine, died Tuesday.

He was a resident of the Spokane area for 20 years.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Seattle.

He was a member of Clayton Grange and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Spokane and a member of the Genealogy Society of Spokane.

Survivors include two sisters, Evelyn Johnson of Spokane and Marion Stanhope of West Hartford, Conn.
