Wildcats’ big run helps tame Bruins

Salim Stoudamire and Ivan Radenovic each scored six points during a decisive 19-0 run early in the second half, and No. 12 Arizona beat UCLA 83-73 on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Josh Shipp’s basket with 17:33 left gave UCLA a five-point lead before Channing Frye’s three-point play 19 seconds later triggered the spurt that put the Wildcats ahead 61-47.

Stoudamire scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Wildcats. Radenovic had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Mustafa Shakur scored 17.

By winning for the 18th time in 20 games and beating UCLA soundly for the third straight time at Pauley Pavilion, the Wildcats (21-4, 11-2 Pac-10) moved into first place in the conference. Washington (20-3, 10-2) plays today at Oregon State.

The win was the 301st in conference play for Lute Olson since he became Arizona’s coach in 1983, and moved him within three of Pac-10 record-holder John Wooden.

Wooden guided UCLA to a 304-74 conference record before retiring in 1975. Olson’s teams are 301-86 against Pac-10 opponents. The 70-year-old Olson and 94-year-old Wooden are both members of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Freshman Jordan Farmar led the Bruins (13-7, 7-6) with a career-high 27 points.

Rory O’Neil scored 19 points, Nick Young got 16 of his 18 points in the second half and the Trojans (10-14, 3-10) beat the visiting Sun Devils (16-9, 5-8).

The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Trojans – just as their 98-94 victory at Tempe did on Jan. 14. But the Trojans are still last in the conference and are in danger of finishing at the bottom of the Pac-10 for the first time since 1995.

Matt Haryasz scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half to help lead the Cardinal (13-9, 7-5) past the visiting Golden Bears (12-10, 5-7).

Stanford’s leading scorer Dan Grunfeld added 16 points, but was lost for the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament with 15:16 remaining in the game.

David Paris scored 18 points and had nine rebounds to pace the Bears.
