Ogilvy captures Chrysler Classic

Associated Press

Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy won his first PGA Tour title, rolling in an 18-foot, downhill birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff with Kevin Na in the Chrysler Classic of Tucson (Ariz.).

Ogilvy shouted for joy after making the difficult putt, and embraced wife Juli on the green after Na missed an 8-footer that would have extended the playoff.

The 27-year-old Ogilvy won for the first time in 108 PGA Tour events, earning $540,000. He closed with a 1-under 71 to match Na (71) and Mark Calcavecchia (69) at 19-under 269. Calcavecchia was eliminated on the first extra hole.

Champions Tour

Morris Hatalsky finished off a second-round 4-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Hale Irwin in the rain-shortened Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in Lutz, Fla.

The scheduled 54-hole event was reduced to 36 on Saturday and pushed completion of the Champions Tour event to today.

Irwin was 6 under with 12 holes to play.

Asian Tour

Australia’s Scott Strange won his first Asian Tour title in Yangon, Myanmar, shooting a 5-under-par 67 to capture the Myanmar Open by a stroke.

Strange finished at 11-under 277 and overtook Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, the defending champion and third-round leader. Canada’s Rick Gibson (68) was the runner-up at 278. Thongchai (74) and India’s Ashok Kumar (72) shared third at 280.

New Zealand PGA

Australia’s Peter O’Malley made a 25-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to win the New Zealand PGA at Christchurch, New Zealand, ruining a comeback attempt by countryman Steven Bowditch.

The 21-year-old Bowditch matched the course record with a 9-under 63 to tie O’Malley (69) at 14-under 274.

Ladies European Tour

Australia’s Karrie Webb overcame a four-stroke deficit in three holes to win the ANZ Ladies Masters for the fifth time.

Webb finished with a 5-under 67 to edge 19-year-old Japanese player Ai Miyazato by a stroke on the Royal Pines course in Gold Coast, Australia. Webb finished at 16-under 272 in the event co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and Australian Ladies Tour. Miyazato closed with an even-par 72.
