Oregon State assistant coach Kevin Mouton, who is taking over for Jay John while the head coach rests at home following a high-blood pressure episode on Saturday that forced him to the hospital, said his team is in good spirits considering the current uncertainty. John visited the team on Monday and Mouton speaks with him multiple times a day on the phone to keep the head coach updated on the team’s progress. “Guys were real upbeat, but they needed to see Jay and needed to see him smile,” Mouton said. “The plan is to not change, but to stick with what’s got us to 10-6.” … Newly hired USC coach Tim Floyd also spoke to his team on Monday, but technically he is an assistant for the rest of this season while interim head coach Jim Saia holds onto his title. Speculation has been running rampant that top scorer Lodrick Stewart will transfer after his twin brother Rodrick did before the season, but Saia said this week that he believes Stewart will remain a Trojan. … UCLA continues to impress since defeating Washington State in double overtime. Last week, the Bruins scored a road win at Arizona State and lost at Arizona only when Salim Stoudamire nailed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
