A seventh suspect was arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday in connection with the Jan. 1 gang-related shooting that killed a man outside a Spokane nightclub.

The Los Angeles gang unit, which has been working with Spokane detectives Minde Connelly and Marty Hill, located and arrested 17-year-old Deric Burton, who was wanted on arrest warrants charging him with riot and first-degree assault, police spokesman Dick Cottam said in a press release.

Six other people face charges in connection with the shooting outside Crazy 8’s, 21 E. Lincoln Road, that killed Calvin Banks, who would have been 29 on Thursday.

Demetrius Route, 18, has been charged with second-degree murder in the case and has been named by witnesses as the person who shot Banks, Cottam said.

According to court records, the shooting was the escalation of an altercation that started inside the bar when one gang member asked the girlfriend of a rival gang member to dance.

Burton, Route and several others received a phone call from a gang member inside Crazy 8’s and they arrived to settle the dispute, court records show.

Spokane police continue to search for 21-year-old Marcus L. Jacquette, who is suspected of conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.
