Tigercats McKenzie, Koller lead South past North
LaCrosse-Washtucna’s Justin McKenzie threw for 127 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead the South to a 36-18 win over the North in the B-8 All-Star football game at Pasco’s Edgar Brown Stadium.
McKenzie completed 8 of 15 passes with one interception, and also ran five times for 62 yards.
McKenzie’s Tigercats teammate, Craig Koller, gave the South a 12-0 lead with a 3-yard TD pass from McKenzie in the first quarter and a 20-yard interception return for TD in the second.
Joey Richardson returned a second-quarter interception 70 yards for a score to trim the South’s lead to 12-6.
The South took a 24-6 lead into halftime with a 1-yard TD run by Garfield-Palouse’s Garrett Parrish and McKenzie’s 14-yard TD pass to Kurt Bowen of St. John-Endicott.
Before the half ended, Josh Adams of Sprague-Harrington took the ball near the goal line with a 50-yard run. But the North failed to score after a fumble on first down.
Adams rallied the North with a pair of third-quarter scores.
He returned a kickoff 80 yards for a TD after bobbling the ball and picking it up off the turf. His 15-yard TD run just before the end of the third quarter cut the deficit to 24-18.
McKenzie threw a 28-yard TD pass with 9 minutes, 24 seconds left to boost the South’s edge to 30-18.
Pe Ell’s Jason Canales, who finished with 62 yards rushing, completed the scoring with a 9-yard run.
The North, with an announced roster of 13, was limited to nine players.
“We were actually going to have less guys because (Lake Quinault’s Darryl Metcalf) was supposed to play on the South team, but he stayed with us,” Adams said. “All the guys who showed up played hard.”
Adams, headed to Montana State-Northern, ran for 164 yards on 18 tries.
Baseball
The Idaho Falls Reds completed the second day of the Spokane Senior American Legion Fourth of July tournament with the only undefeated record among the 12 teams in the field.
But the Reds weren’t perfect. In its first game of the day, at Shadle Park’s Jackson Field, Idaho Falls (3-0-1) settled for a 5-all tie with the Budd Bay Bandits (1-1-1) in a nine-inning game ended by the tournament’s time limit.
The Reds bounced back at Jackson with a 5-3 win over the Kalispell Lakers (1-3), scoring twice in the eighth and making due with three hits.
In other second-day games at Jackson Field, the Blue Devils (1-1) dropped a 6-3 game to Everett (1-2). Logan Davenport had three hits for the Blue Devils. … Cody Brubaker singled, doubled and tripled to lead a 13-hit attack as the Post Falls Patriots (1-1) lashed Kalispell 14-3.
In tournament play at Avista Stadium, the Great Falls (Mont.) Electrics (3-1) defeated the Puyallup South Hill Ravens 5-0 before dropping a 2-0 game to the Blues (2-2) of El Segundo, Calif. Eric Chaon pitched a six-hit complete game and Tyler Fayden singled and doubled to lead Great Falls past the Ravens (1-2). Aussie Mieck hurled a two-hitter to guide El Segundo over Great Falls. … Travis Bertholf scored on a passed ball to cap a two-run bottom of the seventh, giving the Spokane Northstars a 4-3 win over Trail, British Columbia (1-2). Eric Kelly and Pete Birdwell had three hits apiece for the Northstars. Kelly struck out 12 and allowed one hit in seven innings as the Northstars (1-1-1) finished their day with a nine-inning, scoreless tie with Sandpoint Riley Creek Lumber (1-1-1) … Earlier, Quinn Walkington singled and doubled to help Sandpoint to an 8-6 win over El Segundo.
