Eddie Castro became the first jockey to ride nine winners at a track and tied the U.S. record for wins in a day Saturday at Calder Race Course in Miami.

Castro won nine races, including the $100,000 Office Queen Stakes aboard Snug Harbor, to break the mark shared by six jockeys, most recently Ken Shino at Fonner Park in April 2000. The 34-year-old from Panama also matched the mark of nine victories in a day set by Chris Antley, who rode four winners at Aqueduct and five at the Meadowlands in October 1987.

“I knew I was on a lot of live horses yesterday and today,” Castro said. “But I never dreamed I’d win nine in one day. When you’re on good horses you try to make the most of it. It takes some luck to win this many.”

•The Afleet Alex-Scrappy T rematch is off.

While Preakness winner Afleet Alex prepares for the Belmont Stakes, Preakness runner-up Scrappy T was declared out of Saturday’s race by trainer Robbie Bailes.

Bailes wrestled with the decision for more than a week, and said, “We just felt Scrappy T wasn’t where we needed him to be to win the race.”

Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo will be back for another chance at Afleet Alex. Giacomo was expected to arrive in New York from California on Wednesday.

Among other Belmont possibles are Andromeda’s Hero, Pinpoint, Chekhov, Southern Africa, Sort It Out, A.P. Arrow and Nolan’s Cat.

Arizona sends Cal packing

Allyson von Liechtenstein’s bloop single to left field in the 12th inning helped Arizona eliminate California 3-2 at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

California’s loss breaks a streak of three straight appearances in the championship. The Bears beat Arizona to win the title in 2002, and lost to UCLA the past two seasons.

Arizona was to play Texas on Saturday night, but the game was postponed until today because of rain and lightning.

The game between Alabama and DePaul also was postponed. Play will resume today with Alabama batting in the bottom of the eighth and the score tied at 1. The winner will play Tennessee in the afternoon.

Amateur star Evans arrested

Michael Evans was arrested in Dayton, Ohio, on felony drug charges, less than two weeks after he won his second national Golden Gloves title.

The 27-year-old boxer, considered the United States’ top amateur boxer at 132 pounds, was arrested Wednesday night after police said he was involved in a crack cocaine purchase set up by an informant. He was charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine and tampering with evidence.

According to police reports, an informant said Evans was taking crack cocaine orders by phone. Police had the informant set up a buy in a shopping center parking lot.

•Ricky Hatton won the IBF light welterweight title when defending champion Kostya Tszyu quit after the 11th round in Manchester, England.

The unbeaten Hatton, of Britain, who also holds the lightly regarded WBU title, appeared to be ahead on points when Tszyu staggered back to his corner at the end of the 11th and then signaled he couldn’t carry on.

Ex-Clemson football star dies

Banks McFadden, an All-American halfback for Clemson in 1939, died after a long battle with cancer. He was 88.

McFadden died in Ormond Beach, Fla., at the home of his daughter, Clemson spokesman Tim Bourret said.

McFadden, a College Football Hall of Famer who was also a star on the Tigers basketball team, is generally regarded as one of the greatest athletes in Clemson history. The school’s football building is named for him and he was part of the first class inducted into the Ring of Honor, his name high up at football’s Death Valley stadium.

McFadden will be buried next to the football stadium on Cemetery Hill, where Clemson’s famed coach Frank Howard was laid to rest nearly a decade ago.

•Officials at Albertson College in Nampa, Idaho, are putting off deciding whether to restart the Coyotes’ football program.

Albertson College had a football team from 1905 to 1977, but administrators shut down the team because of lack of support.

Last August, Albertson College President Robert Hoover convened a task force to look into the possibility of bringing the program back.

At a meeting on Friday, the Board of Trustees decided to delay any final decision for at least two years.
