LaCaire’s two-run double lifts Mustangs to third place at state

Luke LeCaire’s two-run double in the seventh inning Saturday gave Northport a 9-8 win over Lind-Ritzville in the third- and fourth-place game at the State B baseball tournament at Yakima Valley College’s Parker Field.

Nick Ashley, Jake Kragt and Travis Dewald had RBIs as L-R (22-4) built a 7-2 lead after 4 1/2 innings.

Joe Johnson went 3 for 4 with three runs for the Mustangs (24-4).

•Richland (25-2) completed an impressive run through the State 4A field, defeating Skyline 2-1 for the title at Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium. The Bombers outscored four teams 16-1 at state.

Softball

Colville (23-3) tied for fifth place at the State 2A tournament in Wenatchee, defeating La Center 6-5 in 10 innings to open the day before falling to Elma 13-10. Michelle Ching’s two-out, two-run single in the 10th gave the Indians their opening win. Melissa Rice struck out 13 in a complete game and Whitney Kaiser went 4 for 5 with two RBIs for Colville. The University of Oregon-bound Rice had a sore shoulder and couldn’t pitch the second game. Rachael Huttula’s seven RBIs guided Elma’s win. Emilee Lepp, Nikki Bardwell and Whitney Loan were a combined 10 for 13 for the Indians. … Montesano edged Othello 8-6 in the title game.

•Freeman fell a win shy of the third-place game at the State 1A tournament in Moses Lake, dropping a 6-2 decision to Seattle Christian in the consolation round. Melissa Triber and Erin Cory combined for five hits for the Scotties (19-8), who were 3-2 at state. Freeman began the day with a 10-7 win that eliminated league rival Colfax (16-10). Crystal Heigh’s three-run triple sparked the Scotties to 5-0 lead in the first. Jacklyn Riordan’s RBI double in the sixth gave Freeman a 6-3 lead. The Scotties then knocked out Cedar Park Christian, 7-5. Triber went 3 for 4 with a two-run triple in the fifth, and Jessica Jackson added two hits and two RBIs for the Scotties. … Onalaska took the title with a 2-0 win over Concrete.

•Taryn Short went 4 for 4 with four runs as Touchet eliminated Liberty 22-1 in consolation play of the State B tournament at Yakima. Liberty (21-8) opened the day with a 5-4 win that eliminated Inchelium (22-8). Liberty’s Kristin Crosby went 2 for 2 with one run and one RBI, and Leah Dick scored twice for Inchelium. … Elsewhere, Kim Weber struck out nine and Cara Broteick’s RBI groundout in the seventh gave Colton a 2-1 win over Curlew (25-4) in a loser-out game. Curlew’s Amanda Grumbach pitched a one-hitter, with four strikeouts, but walked Kayla Moehrle to lead off the seventh. Moehrle stole second base and went to third on an error. … Touchet’s Short had two runs and two RBIs as her Indians opened with an 8-3 win that eliminated Selkirk. Jen Ostrum and Jessica Weber were a combined 5 for 8 for Selkirk (21-6). … Toutle Lake defeated Mossyrock 7-3 for the title.
