Funny Cide returns to place 4th

New York Daily News

ELMONT, N.Y. – Two years ago, Funny Cide disappointed a crowd of more than 101,000 when he failed to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner, finishing third in the Belmont Stakes.

On Saturday, the now 5-year-old had the chance to redeem himself at Belmont in the Grade II Brooklyn Handicap, but once again he failed to deliver.

This time though, he had an excuse.

Entering the far turn, Funny Cide was cut off by Cuba and was forced to check hard by jockey Jose Santos, cutting his right front ankle in the process.

He still managed to finish fifth before being moved up to fourth after the stewards disqualified Cuba, ridden by jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. It was the second time on the day that Arroyo was disqualified.

The result didn’t soothe Funny Cide’s trainer, Barclay Tagg.

“He damn near fell down and I’m not happy about it,” said Tagg. “He came into the race absolutely perfect and strong.”

Santos was also upset that Funny Cide didn’t get to show off his best before his fans.

“It’s unbelievable how much these people love Funny Cide. You step on the track and everybody is clapping for him. It’s disappointing.”

The result of the Brooklyn Handicap wasn’t disappointing for the connections of Limehouse, who won the race by a length and a half over favored Gygistar.

The Todd Pletcher-trainee returned $7.80 after running the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.69.
