Colville’s Brown claims Senior crown

Kent Brown of Colville shot an even-par 72 on Thursday to win the 41st Pacific Northwest Senior Men’s Amateur Championship at Wildhorse Resort and Casino in Pendleton, Ore.

Brown, the second-round leader after a 3-under-par 69, completed three rounds at 8-under 208. He held off a challenge from Portland’s Chris Maletis (209) and Spokane’s Jim O’Rourke (210), both of whom finished with 69s.

Spokane’s Craig Ziegler followed up Wednesday’s tournament-best 63 with a 74 and finished fourth at 211.

First-round leader Ron Janney of Colbert finished with a 75 to place sixth at 214.

Baseball

The Spokane RiverHawks encountered the first rainout in team history, as the closing game of their three-game set with the Bend Elks at Spokane Falls Community College was suspended after 10 innings with the score tied at 9.

The RiverHawks (3-1, 2-0 West Coast Collegiate League) and Elks (3-8, 0-2) will resume the game when the teams meet in Bend, Ore., in early July.

Spokane will open a three-game series against the Wenatchee AppleSox at 6:30 tonight at Avista Stadium. The other two games will be at SFCC.

Jordan Moore (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls High), a 49th-round selection of the Colorado Rockies earlier this month, will start for Spokane.

•Five area players were selected to compete in All-State games Saturday and Sunday at Eastmont High in East Wenatchee. Chosen by a committee after feeder games were: Eric Kelly, Rogers; Cameron Joslyn, Mt. Spokane; Mitch Ramsey, Mead; Kyle Hinrichs, Pullman; and Tyler Young, Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia.
