Whitney Bright completes basic training at Lackland AFB

Air Force Airman Whitney Bright has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. She is the daughter of Mitchell and Stacey Bright of Spokane and a 2004 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

“Army Pvt. John Cisneros has graduated from the Light-Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic Advanced Individual Training course at Aberdeen, Md. Proving Ground. He is the son of Dallas Fancy of Spokane, and John Cisneros of Colorado Springs, Colo.

“Army Pfc. John Adams has graduated from the Special Electronic Devices Repairer Advance Individual Training course at Fort Gordon, Augusta, Ga. He is a 1988 graduate of North Central High School and the son of Sherri Adams of Spokane Valley.

“ Michelle R. Thivierge has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army after completion of the Army ROTC program and has graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University. She is the daughter of Geri Emerson of Albion, Wash., and Brian Thivierge of Clarkston, and a 2001 graduate of Pullman High School.

“ Matthew A. Allen received the George C. Marshall Award during the annual ROTC awards seminar held at the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. The award is presented to the most outstanding junior and senior ROTC cadets. Allen, a 2001 graduate of Colville High School, is the son of Ron and Kathleen Allen of Colville.

“ Area residents attending Washington State University have received scholarships for the next academic year.

Barbara Gilbert has received a $1,100 George and Harriet Brain Administrative Leadership Award. Gilbert, a ninth-grade language arts teacher at University High School, is working toward her doctoral degree in educational leadership.

Senior Steven Bates received a $2,000 Herbert L. Eastlick Scholarship. The son of Julia and Steven Bates of Deer Park, he is a pre-dental student and a 1999 graduate of Freeman High School.

Second-year veterinary medicine student Dawnville Bonser, received a $1,000 Anna Conley Trust Scholarship. She is a 2000 graduate of Riverside High School and is the daughter of Smoki and Mark Bonser, Elk.

Jessica Cross, daughter of Kathleen and Kenneth Cross of Valleyford, received a $600 Dorothy Dix Jackson Dunleer and Halwen A. Dunleer Scholarship. A 2002 graduate of Freeman High School, she is an elementary education senior.

Third-year zoology, Asian studies and art student, Sheila Doyle, received a $750 George Van Vleet Scholarship. She is a 2002 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School and the daughter of Dennis and Patricia Doyle of Spokane. Doyle plans to study in Japan during summer and fall semesters.

Esther Gaines, a senior studying health and fitness education, received a $1,400 Viola Quinn Scholarship, a $500 Helen G. Smith Scholarship, and a $500 Virginia Shaw Scholarship. She is the daughter of Karen and Raymond Gaines of Spokane.

Derek Mulgrew has received a $2,000 Herbert L. Eastlick Scholarship. Mulgrew, a junior studying pre-medicine, is the founder of Project Uganda and plans to practice medicine in Uganda this summer. A 2002 graduate of Ferris High School, he is the son of Chris Mulgrew of Spokane.

Cara Preuss, daughter of Doreen Preuss of Spokane and Greg Preuss of Mead, has received a $1,700 Laurence J. Peter Memorial Scholarship in Teacher Education. An education graduate student, Preuss is currently a teacher-trainer for the Peace Corps in Mingochenr, Azerbaijan.

Stephanie Simmons, a recent graduate of Kettle Falls High School, has received a $1,700 WSU Alumni Leadership Scholarship. The daughter of Annette and Steven Simmons of Kettle Falls, she plans to study business beginning this fall.

Kathleen Burgard and Scott Tarbuttin, students at Washington State University, have been selected as members of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

Burgard, a 2001 graduate of University High School and the daughter of Karen and Daniel Burgard of Spokane Valley, is a senior studying French and German.

Tarbuttin, a senior studying biology and ecology, is the son of Janet and Alan Tarbutton of Spokane Valley. He is a 2001 graduate of University High School.

“Brianne Hood graduated this spring from Washington State University with a master’s degree in human development. The daughter of Karen and Jim Hood of Greenacres, she is a 1999 graduate of Central Valley High School and holds a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University.

“Spokane resident Michael Pearson has been inducted into Omicron Delta Epsilon, an international economics honor society, at Linfield College, McMinnville, Ore.

“Jonathan Menashi of Spokane, has graduated from the University of Albany, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology.

“Julia Carr, a Shadle Park High School graduate, graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism, Eugene, during spring commencement. She is the daughter of Steve and Deanne Carr of Spokane.

“Ryne Schillinger, a graphic design major, has been named to the dean’s list at the Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design. He is the son of Dale and Jeanne Schillinger of Spokane.

“Northwest Christian Schools has announced the honor roll for the 2004-05 academic year.
