EUGENE, Ore. – West Coast Conference rivals Kea Kometani and Kellan McConnell worked together Wednesday night for the benefit of the Spokane Indians.

Kometani, who pitched for Pepperdine, and Santa Clara product McConnell (1-0) combined on a five-hitter to carry the Indians to a 6-1 win in Northwest League play at Civic Stadium.

Kometani worked the first four innings, allowing four singles while striking out five and walking one. McConnell also struck out five and walked one, surrendering only Brian Cavanaugh’s two-out home run in the seventh.

The season-opening, five-game set is tied at 1 apiece, with Eugene winning 3-2 on Tuesday.

Steve Murphy and K.C. Herren were both 3 for 5 while guiding the Indians’ 11-hit attack.

Spokane leadoff hitter Joe Kemp scored from first base in the first inning on Murphy’s double plus an error. Kemp singled home Herren in the second for a 2-0 lead.

Herren’s RBI triple sparked a two-run fourth for a 4-0 lead. His RBI double in the eighth made it 5-1.

German Duran scored the final run on Murphy’s hard-hit ball that was ruled an error.

Spokane right-hander Brett Zamzow is scheduled to start today against Brent Carter.

Notes

Pitchers Broc Coffman and Justin Abbott have been added to Spokane’s roster, giving the Indians 11 pitchers. Coffman, the lone left-hander on the staff, finished 8-0 this year for Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges champion Lower Columbia College of Longview, Wash. The Rainier, Ore., native was drafted in the 48th round earlier this month. Abbott was signed as a free agent after finishing 5-7 with 69 strikeouts in 90 innings at Southern Utah University.
