Scott Stockwell of Post Falls, Lakeside’s Wolfe first-teamers

It’s hard to imagine how much more Scott Stockwell could have done for the Post Falls High boys basketball team this winter.

Stockwell, a 6-foot-2 senior point guard, led the Trojans (18-9) to the Inland Empire League championship. The season culminated with a state trophy for finishing fourth. He scored 513 points, averaging 19 per game. He also pitched in 7.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and three steals.

For his efforts, Stockwell was named to the 4A All-Idaho (formerly all-state) first team.

Joining Stockwell as first-team picks from the area was Lakeside senior point guard Tim Wolfe, who was tabbed to the 1A All-Idaho team.

The were voted on by coaches statewide. The Idaho Statesman newspaper in Boise, which compiles the votes, announced boys and girls teams Sunday.

Stockwell easily eclipsed 1,000 points in his career and broke the all-time school career scoring record, finishing two points short of 1,400. It’s a mark that will likely stand for some time.. The previous record was 1,024 set by Chad Quesnell in 1998.

“It was a great year all the way around,” said Stockwell, who also was named the IEL’s player of the year. “It’s the best year I’ve ever had and I’ve got to thank my teammates. I made some good friends. We got to state and got some iron (trophy). It was definitely fulfilling.”

His father, Dave Stockwell, had a courtside seat the whole way as the Trojans’ head coach.

“Early in the season the team thought Scott was going to carry us,” Dave Stockwell said, alluding to the Trojans’ 1-5 start. “Then he got everybody else involved about Christmas time and we won nine in a row.

“His leadership in practice and games was key. He was pretty focused all the way through on what he was supposed to do. He really showed a lot of maturity. I’m more proud of that than his statistics.”

Scott Stockwell also put his name in the state tournament record book by breaking two records and tying another in the six-year-old division. He scored 79 points in three games, breaking the previous record of 75. He scored 36 in the Trojans’ trophy-clinching victory, topping the old mark by a point. He also tied the record for most field goals in a game with 11.

He scored 164 points in his final six games (27.3 average), including a career-high 45, which is believed to be a school record.

“When the game was really big he had big games,” Dave Stockwell said. “He and K.C. Billetz (Post Falls’ other senior starter) just decided we were going to win a trophy.”

Before state, recruiting interest was lukewarm in Stockwell. It’s warmed considerably in recent weeks.

NCAA Division II schools Northwest Nazarene and Seattle University are at the top of his list and he’s planning visits. Rocky Mountain College, an NAIA Division I school in Billings, Mont., also has expressed interest, along with several junior colleges, including North Idaho College.

Wolfe, a three-year starter, led Lakeside (23-3) to North Star League and District I championships. Fourth at state a year ago, the Knights advanced to the semifinals this year before losing their final two games.

Wolfe averaged a team-high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds, six steals and five assists.

“Even though we didn’t do as well at state this year, it was still my best season ever,” Wolfe said. “The league and district titles mean a lot.”

When the Knights needed a lift, Wolfe came through.

“He contributed in all ways,” Lakeside coach Stacey Sonder said. “He ran the offense and he was a good floor leader.”

Wolfe said he plans on attending NIC, where he hopes to play basketball.

Three other area athletes were named to second teams. They are: Billetz, Jenna Griffitts of Coeur d’Alene and Becky Lowther of Bonners Ferry.
