Record safe for Going-to-the-Sun Road opening

Associated Press

KALISPELL, Mont. – Despite a lack of snow at lower elevations, Glacier National Park snowplow crews say there’s no chance Going-to-the-Sun Road will open in record-breaking time this year.

The average opening date of the 52-mile scenic road is June 8. In 1987, crews cleared a path by May 16, the earliest opening date on record.

Glacier Facilities Chief Lou Summerfield said there’s little hope of matching or beating that record.

Plow crews are seeing just as much snow on and above the 6,646-foot Logan Pass this year as they do most years, with some areas deeper than normal, translating into high avalanche danger, he said.
