Joslyn pitches Wildcats to first GSL baseball title

The Spokesman-Review

Mt. Spokane topped West Valley 10-2 Friday behind the five-hit pitching of Cameron Joslyn, and the Wildcats won the Greater Spokane League baseball title for the first time.

“It was always in our minds,” said second-year Mt. Spokane coach Alex Schuerman of the league title. “We talked a lot about having the team that could do it. The true test was after Shadle thumped us a couple times, we took care of our part of the deal and we got some help.”

The Wildcats were swept last week by the Highlanders, but won three consecutive games to win the title.

Friday’s home win was built on a mixture of Joslyn’s pitching (he struck out nine and walked none) and the hitting of Keith Tappe, Joslyn and Paul Smith.

Tappe had three hits, including a three-run home run as part of a five-run third that broke open the game. Joslyn and Smith each added two more hits.

Mt. Spokane also earned the top seed in the District 8 4A playoffs next week.

The Wildcats (15-4 overall, 14-4 GSL) earned a bye into the second round, as did Shadle Park, which captured the No. 2 seed with its win over East Valley. The Highlanders (14-5, 13-5) tied with Ferris, but earn the second seed because of their 11-5 win over the Saxons in April.

The Saxons (14-6, 13-5) will be the No. 3 seed and play Central Valley (11-9, 9-9), the sixth seed, at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Avista Stadium. The Bears defeated Ferris 4-3 on Wednesday. The district nightcap will pit University (11-8, 11-7), the No. 4 seed and winner of nine of its last 10, against fifth-seeded Gonzaga Prep (9-9, 9-10) at 7. Both are loser-out games, with the winners advancing to play Mt. Spokane and Shadle on Friday.

The GSL’s 3A teams advance to regional play with the Mid-Valley League starting Tuesday, with GSL No. 1 West Valley (11-7, 11-7) hosting MVL No. 2 Ellensburg, winners of six straight, and GSL No. 2 North Central (11-9, 11-7) traveling to the MVL No. 1 West Valley (Yakima), the fifth-ranked team in the state. Only East Valley (11-9, 10-8), the GSL’s No. 3 seed, has to play a loser-out game, hosting the MVL No. 4 Sunnyside (11-9).
