Voters approve school district levy

From staff reports

The Coeur d’Alene School District’s supplemental levy passed with 54.51 percent approval Tuesday.

The unofficial results show 2,993 votes in favor and 2,498 votes against the $14.6 million, two-year levy. It needed a simple majority to pass.

Results won’t be official until trustees certify the election at the next school board meeting, Clerk Fran Bischof said Wednesday.

Incumbents in Zones 4 and 5 were re-elected to the school board. Diane Zipperer received 296 votes while write-in candidate Kathleen Silvas received 145 votes in the race to represent Zone 4. Sid Fredrickson beat out Diane Tetzner in the Zone 5 election 368 to 179.

Bischof said 32 “spoiled” ballots were not counted in the election for Zone 4.

Some voters simply turned in blank ballots, Bischof said, or made more than one X on the ballot. Some voters wrote in their own name or the name of someone who hadn’t officially declared candidacy, she said.

In one instance, Bischof said, somebody wrote in “none of the above.”

Bischof said voters were instructed to mark an X on the ballots and some instead put a check mark. In that case, Bischof said the votes were counted.

As long as there was “clear representation of voter intent,” Bischof said, the votes were counted.
