Local Methodist Church helps tsunami victims

The Spokesman-Review

The Community United Methodist Church in Coeur d’Alene recently contributed several thousand dollars to the United Methodist Committee on Relief which has contributed a total of $32.4 million so far to the South Asia Tsunami emergency fund for disaster victims. This is the largest combined amount ever received by UMCOR for disaster aid, with 100 percent of donations going to the effort.

Thousands of health kits, medicine boxes and school supply kits have also been donated to the cause. UMCOR administrative costs are covered by special offerings within the United Methodist Churches worldwide.

Due to the magnitude of the relief effort, it has been recognized as the first time that women have emerged in leadership roles within the group during disaster support of this kind.

The local CUMC Women provide fund-raiser support to the UMCOR relief fund as one of their major missions and members also serve as volunteers at the Sager Brown facility in New Orleans, where millions of items are stored and sorted to be sent worldwide. The local UMC Women also participate in the annual One Great Hour of Sharing, where special offerings are designated to support UMCOR administration so that 100 percent of donations go to relief efforts.
