Coeur d’Alene’s softball team took second for the fourth straight year and the fifth time in six years at the Idaho State 5A tournament in Coeur d’Alene.

Timberline beat the Vikings twice, one a 3-0 shutout by Mandy Klein. The second was in the championship game, 4-3 in nine-innings.

To get back to the championship, CdA’s Heather Helmhout no-hit Borah 3-0.

In the title game, the teams were knotted 2-2 heading into the ninth inning, but Timberline (28-3) pushed across two runs. The first came on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt and the second came on Kristen Clovis’ third double of the game.

CdA (22-8) made it a one-run game in its half of the ninth when the Vikings’ lone senior, Sammy Ritzheimer, singled home Brianna Robson. Jenna DeLong followed with a single, but Klein fanned Helmhout and then threw out Jordan Corbey on a come-backer to end it.

•The St. Maries Lumberjacks finished third in the State 3A tournament in Buhl, losing 9-8 in eight innings to Bear Lake with a berth in the championship game on the line.

Senior Rachelle Solom went 2 for 3 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs for the Lumberjacks.

Baseball

Post Falls surprising season ended with a second-place finish at the State 4A tournament in Boise.

Minico (24-7) held the Trojans (17-11) to five hits and breezed to a 5-1 victory in the championship game at Bishop Kelly High School.

Still, Post Falls coach Mick Zeller was pleased after his team lost its top pitcher at the beginning of the season, had three players suspended and had two more quit.

“It was a very special season,” Zeller said. “We’ve come through more adversity this season than I’ve had in 17 years of coaching.”
