East Valley, West Valley will battle for state berth

It’ll be a battle of the Valleys Tuesday for the final regional berth into the State 3A baseball tournament.

At Selah on Saturday, East Valley won two loser-out games to stay alive, and West Valley lost its chance to win the regional title.

West Valley-Yakima beat the Eagles 12-4 in the regional championship game, as the Rams scored six runs in the first inning off WV ace Greg Bradley. The Eagles (12-8) scored four in the bottom of the third to draw within two runs, but the Rams scored five in the fifth off Alex Stanley to blow open the game.

EV (14-9) shut out Ellensburg 10-0, then came back to beat Selah 6-5 in another loser-out game. The Knights scored all of their runs in the first four innings to build a 6-2 lead. Closer Tanner Hamilton hung on, allowing a single run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Selah eliminated North Central (11-11) earlier in the day, 8-3. Boone Plager and Brandon Hare had a pair of hits for the Indians.

EV plays at WV at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

•At Pullman, the host Greyhounds won the District 7 2A title and Chewelah won a pair of loser-out games to grab the second seed into the state tournament, beginning Saturday. … J.T. Levenseller and Justin Cooper both had two-run doubles in a nine-run first for the Greyhounds (20-2) in their five-inning, 12-1 win over Riverside in the district championship. Cooper added a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and picked up the win. Ryan Druffel had three hits and a solo shot for Pullman. … Chewelah (17-6) avenged an earlier upset loss this week to Riverside (6-18) by winning the loser-out, winner-to-state game 2-1. A.J. Proszek pitched a complete game for the Cougars, allowing three hits and striking out four. Proszek also tied the game with a solo homer in the fourth, and the Cougars moved ahead when Jordan Hoxie stole third in the fifth and scored on the catcher’s errant throw. … Chewelah won the first game of the day, eliminating Medical Lake (11-12) 8-2 behind an 11-strikeout complete game by Michael McCanna. Allen Stone went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and McCanna and Kirk Kubik both had three hits.

•Newport (21-0) captured the District 7 1A championship with a 4-0 win over Freeman at Newport. Nick Collison allowed four hits in six innings, striking out 13 for the Grizzlies. … Freeman (13-10) battled back to earn the second spot into state with an 8-3 win over Kettle Falls, eliminating the Bulldogs (6-13). Nate Szymanowski threw a complete game to get the win for the Scotties, and Scott Ferguson, Shane Lewis and Ryan Horlen all contributed two hits and an RBI.

• Asotin and Colton advanced to the State B tournament from the District 9 tournament in Colfax, but DeSales surprised nobody, winning the district championship 7-1 over Asotin. Michael Richard struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings to get the win for DeSales, which has won 12 of the last 13 state titles. Asotin (15-2) earns the No. 2 seed out of District 9. … Colton (14-4) grabbed the third seed into state, eliminating LaCrosse-Washtucna (11-8) 10-2. Kyle Schultheis pitched a complete game for the Wildcats. … Asotin advanced into the title game by beating L-W 8-2. Brian Schneider allowed three hits and contributed three as well, including a double, for the Panthers.

Softball

Jordan Emmil launched four home runs and Melissa Rice struck out 30 batters in Colville’s 10-0, 9-0 sweep of visiting Pullman (6-12, 3-9 Great Northern League). Emmil had eight RBIs on the day for the Indians (19-1, 12-0). … Visiting Medical Lake swept Riverside 7-6 and 11-1 to earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the District 7 2A tournament, which begins Thursday in Medical Lake. Charlotte Psick went 2 for 3 with two RBIs in the opener, and Rachel Maddox homered twice in the second game, with Caitlin Smith homering and getting the win for the Cardinals (11-7, 9-3). Riverside (8-10, 4-8) will be the No. 4 seed.

Claire Moberg scored on a squeeze bunt by Jessica Jackson to give Freeman (15-5) a 7-6 win and the District 7 1A championship. Earlier in the inning, Kelsey Raines had scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game. … Colfax (14-8) came back through the losers bracket to earn the second spot into regionals with a 1-0 win over KF, eliminating the Bulldogs (16-6). Lynnea Vantrease threw a one-hit shutout for Colfax, which scored the game’s only run on back-to-back doubles by Vantrease and Jill Solbrack in the seventh.

Boys soccer

Carl Haas scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute as Pullman defeated Medical Lake (13-5) 2-1 in the District 7 2A championship at Mead. Both advance to the state tournament, hosting first-round game. Ming Fei Wang kicked off the scoring with a 25th-minute goal, then Haas followed in the second half to give the Greyhounds (16-1) a two-goal lead. ML’s Jason Gomez scored in the 78th minute to bring the Cardinals (13-5) within one, but they didn’t have time for the equalizer.

Track and field

Tony Yeaw won both sprints and Justin Emel swept the hurdles to lead Newport to the boys team title at the Northeast A District championships at Central Valley. Freeman’s Kevin Hatch won the high jump, long jump and the pole vault. On the girls’ side, Lauren Mellor won the 400-meter run and the high jump to lead Colfax’s team title.

•Northport’s Chad Butorac set meet records in the 100, 200 and 400 meters at the Panorama League championships in Colville. Springdale’s Adam Thompson swept the jumps, including a meet record in the triple jump. Republic won the meet with a score of 140. On the girls’ side, Kirsten Fix of St. George’s set meet records in the 800 and 1,600, and was part of the record-setting 1,600 relay team. St. George’s 142 1/2 points edged Republic (126) for the team championship.
