District 9 softball: The Whitman County League split four games with the Blue Mountain Conference Tuesday, putting two WCL teams one win away from the State B tournament. WCL No. 1 Colton blew out BML No. 4 Liberty Christian 12-2, and WCL No. 3 LaCrosse-Washtucna pulled the upset over BML No. 2 DeSales, winning 11-8. Colton plays L-W at 10 a.m. at the TRAC Complex in Pasco for a spot in the championship, guaranteeing a state berth. Garfield-Palouse and Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia, losers on Tuesday, will play at 10 a.m. to stay alive, with the winner having to win two more loser-out games to grab the third entry into the state tournament.

State B baseball: Lind-Ritzville opens the tournament with a game against Rainier Christian, formerly Kentview Christian, a school with 104 students located in Auburn. The Mustangs made state trips in 2000 and 2004, going one-and-out last year. The winner of that game faces the winner of Asotin vs. Waterville, the champion out of the North Central District. Almira/Coulee-Hartline, third out of District 7, may have drawn the toughest bracket, with a first-round matchup against District 5 champion La Salle and District 9 champion DeSales waiting in the quarterfinals. ACH and La Salle have a common opponent, though neither had any luck. Lind-Ritzville beat ACH three times, and swept La Salle in a doubleheader. Between them, first-round opponents Colton and Reardan have 24 state tournament appearances and have played twice. Colton beat the Indians 9-1 in the first round in 1982 and 15-6 in the first round in 1984. The winner will meet the Northport/Kittitas winner in the quarterfinals.
