Fresno State cruises past SJSU

Paul Pinegar passed for 368 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to help the 21st-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs cruise to a 45-7 Western Athletic Conference victory over the San Jose State Spartans in Fresno, Calif.

Pinegar matched David Carr’s school record with the 70th touchdown pass of his career, and Paul Williams caught six passes for 137 yards and a score for the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-0 WAC), who didn’t encounter much resistance from their oldest rival, San Jose State.

Wendell Mathis ran for 105 yards and a score as Fresno State beat the woeful Spartans (1-8, 0-6) for the 12th straight time since 1990. The Bulldogs took a 31-0 lead 46 seconds into the third quarter before rolling through San Jose State’s defense for 531 total yards.

Yonus Davis rushed for 136 yards on 16 carries for San Jose State. Al Guidry scored the lone touchdown for the Spartans – a 29-yard run with 9:49 remaining in the third quarter. He finished with 65 yards on nine carries.

Three San Jose State quarterbacks managed just 48 passing yards, connecting on only 5 of 23 attempts.

Nevada 38, Hawaii 28

Jeff Rowe passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another and B.J. Mitchell ran for 150 yards and two scores to lead the Wolf Pack (5-3, 4-1) past the Warriors (3-6, 3-4) in Reno, Nev.

Caleb Spencer caught a pair of touchdown passes for the Wolf Pack, who are bidding for their first winning season since 1998.

Hawaii freshman Colt Brennan completed 29 of 43 passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns, but he was sacked five times and intercepted once. Freshman Davone Bess had 12 catches for 171 yards and a touchdown for the Warriors, who needed a victory to keep alive any hopes for a bowl berth.

Robert Hubbard added 88 yards rushing for Nevada, which led 17-14 at the half and went ahead 24-14 early in the third quarter when Spencer made a one-handed catch in the end zone on a 14-yard toss from Rowe.

Louisiana Tech 27, Utah St. 17

Matt Kubik ran for one touchdown and threw for another to propel the Bulldogs (5-3, 4-1) to a victory over the Aggies (2-6, 1-4) in Logan, Utah.

Patrick Jackson rushed for 71 yards and scored a touchdown for the Bulldogs, who were 0-3 on the road before beating the Aggies.

Louisiana Tech turned four Utah State turnovers into 17 points and took control after a botched fake punt attempt by the Aggies late in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs, leading by three then, took over on the Aggies’ 43-yard line. A 3-yard touchdown run by Jackson on the sixth play of the drive gave Louisiana Tech a 20-10 lead with 14:20 left in the game.

Kevin Robinson fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Bulldogs recovered it on Utah State’s 21. Five plays later, a 9-yard touchdown pass from Kubik to Eric Newman gave Louisiana Tech a 27-10 lead with 12:31 remaining in the game.
