Art majors mix it up at Interplayers

A multifaceted show of student work is under way at the Interplayers theater’s Gellhorn Gallery in Spokane.

Variety in style and mediums characterizes the Eastern Washington University Senior Capstone Exhibition, “Self Editing.”

The group show includes ceramics, drawings, mixed media, paintings, photography and sculpture.

The 13 exhibiting senior art majors are Afton Allard, Genevieve Arnold, Heather Bracken-Romig, Gabriel Brown, Heather Dretsch, Robert Evans, Sierra Furtwangler, Courtney Haney, Saul Martinez, Jacob McBeth, Maureen O’Leary, Eli Sevenich and Alexis Thomas.

An artists’ reception is Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery, 174 S. Howard St. The work can be seen through Nov. 30. Call 455-PLAY (7529) for free viewing hours.

Coeur d’Alene’s Artwalk

The monthly Second Friday Artwalk in Coeur d’Alene continues with 10 downtown galleries having receptions from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday (most shows are up for four weeks):

“ Angel Gallery of Fine Art and Antiques, 423 Sherman Ave., presents the Northwest Papier Mache Artists’ Guild. Look for work by Peggy Donovan, Leata Judd, Sherri Ballman, Larry Thomas, Rhea Giffin, Judy Minter, Sherri Gittel and Nancy Heffter.

“ Art Spirit Gallery, 415 Sherman Ave., is highlighting Katherine Nelson’s charcoal drawings and encaustic works in “Land Light and Form,” through Nov. 26.

“ Cisco’s, 212 N. Fourth St., specializes in Western, Native American, sporting and wildlife art.

“ Devin Galleries, 507 Sherman Ave., is showing “The Gifts We Bring,” the gallery’s annual show featuring artwork from the Coeur d’Alene School District # 271 Art Teachers.

“ Eclectic Artisan’s Gallery, 211 Coeur d’Alene Ave., No. 101, is the Second Friday Artwalk’s featured gallery. This new gallery features some of the area’s finest local artists in a variety of mediums.

“ Erlendson Art Glass, 116 E. Lakeside Ave., is showcasing handblown glass sculptures, pumpkins and vines. There are ongoing glass-blowing demonstrations.

“ Frame of Mind Gallery, 119 N. Second St., is spotlighting Nona Hengen’s 44 oil paintings included in her limited-edition, autographed book, “Carousel Odyssey.”

“ Northwest Artists, 217 Sherman Ave., features 30 artists and crafters with ceramic objects, photography, feather jewelry, carved wooden bowls, paintings and sculpture. In the spotlight during November are Joan E. Schilling’s stained glass pieces.

“ The Painter’s Chair Fine Art Gallery, 223 Sherman Ave., presents new contemporary art by Hayley Shortridge and interior paintings by Stephen Shortridge, along with live entertainment.

“ Summers’ Glass, 211 Sherman Ave., offers a collection of fused glass masks, bowls, jewelry and ornaments in fall colors. Meet photographer Sue Kochevar and her collection of digitally enhanced images.

“ Additional venues displaying artwork include: All Things Irish, 315 Sherman Ave.; Christmas at the Lake, 517 Sherman Ave.; Rivers of Art, 110 N. Fourth St.; and Worthington’s Fine Antiques and Gifts, 210 Sherman Ave.

Pacific Flyway Gallery turns 20

Pacific Flyway Gallery is celebrating its 20th anniversary with “Paint Pacific Flyway,” an art competition for regional artists, and a show featuring two national artists: Terry Isaac and Rod Frederick.

Isaac is best known for his songbirds and Frederick for his wildlife paintings in long horizontal or vertical formats. Both artists live in Oregon and will be at the gallery’s birthday party on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at 313 E. Sprague Ave.

View the work through November during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

‘WomensWorks’ fair

The 10th annual “WomensWorks Holiday Art and Craft Fair” takes over the Student Union ballroom on Friday and Saturday on the University of Idaho’s Moscow campus.

More than 35 women artists from throughout the Palouse will be showing jewelry, silk batiks, photography, watercolor cards and prints, beadwork, fiber art, pottery, stained glass, candles, soaps, handblown glass, furniture, handmade paper journals and quilts.

All “WomensWorks” artists will donate a portion of their proceeds to support the UI Women’s Center programs and projects.

There will be live instrumental holiday music, and artwork donated by participating artists will be raffled off during the show.

Stop by on Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Student Union Building is located on the corner of Sixth and Deakin streets. For more information, call the Women’s Center at (208) 885-6616.

Photography at Parlor Gallery

The Paulsen House Parlor Gallery is showing the images of Spokane photographer David Ryan through November.

Ryan specializes in architectural and landscape photography. Among his works are pictures of the Riverfront Park Clocktower, Spokane Convention Center and St. John’s Cathedral bell tower at night.

Meet Ryan during at a reception on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., in the gallery, 245 E. 13th Ave. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays, with weekend viewing by appointment. For more information call gallery curator Gloria Waggoner at 455-6661.

Nelson at NIC

“Dam: Reflections on the Waste Stream” is an exhibit highlighting Rik Nelson’s collages created from materials typically thrown away by consumers.

The show runs through Dec. 9 in North Idaho College’s Boswell Hall Corner Gallery, on the Coeur d’Alene campus. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“ Seattle-based artist Matthew Whitney’s 4- by 6-foot oil painting “Jacob’s Well” is being unveiled Saturday at the New Hope Christian Center, 1108 N. Argonne Road in Spokane Valley.
