Don’t discredit Eagles
It’s a good thing I wasn’t on top of Showalter Hall when I read John Blanchette’s column Wednesday, “Eagles’ title chances show flaw in system.” I would have fallen off in disbelief.
Hypothetically speaking here, let’s say Eastern does make the playoffs and does advance. Won’t it be Blanchette who will be sitting in the media suite at Woodward Field showering coach (Paul) Wulff, Erik Meyer and Eric Kimble with compliments? Or what if, say, Coach Wulff gets an offer to take over the sorry football team in Pullman that this newspaper still devotes six full pages to every Sunday?
I am not asking Blanchette to spin a somewhat disappointing season into a positive light, but an accomplishment such as making the playoffs is still an accomplishment, especially in the Big Sky Conference, which is the toughest in I-AA.
I bet San Diego sports writers didn’t criticize their Padres when they won their division and made the baseball playoffs with a record barely better than .500. I can’t believe local journalists would discredit the accomplishments of a local university.
Eastern might not be WSU, but at least it has won a conference game.
