North Idaho can’t pull repeat, loses to Eagles
North Idaho couldn’t recreate the magic of its last meeting with Southern Idaho.
Aneli Cubi-Otineru had 24 kills and JoAnna Kaczor added 20 kills as No. 1 CSI held off No. 4 NIC 30-20, 22-30, 30-24, 30-19 in the final of the SWAC Region 18 Tournament Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho.
NIC had beaten the Eagles in five games on Oct. 29.
Marta Siemiatkowska added 12 kills, 11 blocks and hit .522 as CSI (46-2) hit .302 as a team.
The Cardinals (31-5) were held to just a .116 attack percentage, despite the 17 kills and .350 hitting percentage of Konae Purcell. Purcell was the only Cardinal in double digits in kills as CSI outhit NIC 66-46 and outblocked the Cardinals 15-6.5.
•Five Vandals finished with double digits in kills as Idaho held off Boise State 30-24, 30-14, 23-30, 34-32 in Western Athletic Conference action in Moscow, Idaho.
Haley Larsen led the way with 18 kills for Idaho (14-13, 6-8), while Amanda Bowman added 15 kills, Sarah Loney had 11 kills and seven blocks, Erin Curtis finished with 11 kills and Kati Tikker chipped in another 10 kills.
BSU (6-16, 2-12) was led by Cameron Flunder’s 18 kills.
•Bibiana Candelas had a match-high 19 kills while hitting .367 as No. 15 Southern California swept Washington State 30-22, 30-28, 30-25 in Pac-10 action in Los Angeles.
Staci Venski added 16 kills and Diana Copenhagen 11 and 18 digs for USC (14-8, 10-4).
Brittany Johnson led WSU (8-20, 1-14) with 11 kills.
•Becky Jones moved into seventh place on Gonzaga’s single-season kill list, but it wasn’t enough to overcome four Dons in double-digit kills as San Francisco held off Gonzaga 30-26, 30-19, 25-30, 30-21 in West Coast Conference action in San Francisco.
Jones finished with 26 kills to lead the Bulldogs (10-19, 2-10), but Kristin Hasselberg had 20 kills and KeLicia Shorts added 19 as the Dons (17-11, 4-8) outhit Gonzaga 69-51.
Men’s soccer
Matt Languis and Mike Bagheri scored in the first 19 minutes as San Francisco shut out Gonzaga 2-0 in West Coast Conference action on Martin Field.
The loss ended any hopes the Bulldogs (7-9-4, 5-5-2) had of earning a share of the WCC title as well as a playoff berth.
Geremy Uhl made a pair of saves to earn the shutout for the Dons (11-5-4, 6-3-3), who are looking to defend their league title.
Men’s basketball
Shea Bradshaw had 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range as North Idaho beat Casper College 72-59 in the Casper Tournament in Casper, Wyo.
Frank Clair added 14 points and four rebounds and Darin Nagle had 11 points and eight rebounds for NIC.
Casper was led by the 27 points and 11 rebounds of Hirsto Nikolov.
Women’s basketball
Stephanie Hawk poured in 26 points, 14 in the second half, as Gonzaga finished its exhibition season 2-0 after pulling away for an 86-61 win over Seattle Pacific at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The Falcons stayed with the Bulldogs for 25 minutes before Gonzaga broke open a 35-34 halftime lead.
Anne Bailey and Maria Hassett added 17 points apiece for the Bulldogs, and both Bailey and Hawk pulled down seven rebounds.
Cross country
Haley Paul finished ninth to lead the Washington State women to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional Meet on Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
Paul finished the 6,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 27.5 seconds. Stanford’s Arianna Lambie won the individual title, leading five Cardinal in the top eight.
Washington State finished with 199 points, just nine behind seventh-place San Diego State. Stanford won the team results with 24 points. Washington was third with 117.
On the men’s side, Drew Polley was 48th, finishing the 10,000-meter course in 31:24.9, as the Cougars took 11th place with 301 points, just six behind 10th-place Long Beach State. Arizona took first with 33 points. Washington tied with Portland for fourth with 106.
Freshman Kevin Friesen finished 65th, coming in at 31:56.4 as Idaho’s men took 17th with 515 points.
Mandy Macalister took 28th, finishing in a time of 21:18.3 as Idaho took 13th. The Vandals finished with 336 points, just one behind Oregon State.
John Timeus led Eastern’s men’s team to a 13th-place finish, coming in at 31:19, good for 40th place.
Camille Gibb led the women, finishing 51st in a time of 21:44.
Gonzaga’s Joe Miller finished 39th in a time of 31:18.0, while Jill Semenza was 68th on the women’s side, finishing in 22:07.3. Gonzaga did not field full men’s or women’s teams.
•Whitworth’s Kristi Dickey finished fourth in the NCAA Division III West Regionals in Salem, Ore., qualifying for the NCAA Division III championship meet next Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan.
Dickey covered the 6,000-meter course in 22:28.75. Willamette’s Sarah Zerzan took first, finishing in 21:58.00. Dickey’s teammate Julie Lauterbach also earned a berth to nationals, taking sixth in 22:39.85 as the Pirates finished fifth. Willamette took first.
On the men’s side, Whitworth’s Doug Blackburn earned his third trip to the NCAA Championships by taking fourth, covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:34.55. Crosby Freeman of Pomona-Pitzer took first in 24:41.35.
Whitworth’s Jeff Grassley (28th, 26:35.00) and Jacob Deitz (29th, 26:27.85) earned All-Region honors.
Willamette took the team title.
