Orthodox bishop visits city
Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, 12407 E. 16th Ave., Spokane Valley, is hosting Bishop Joseph Al-Zehlaoui today at 8 a.m. to ordain the first Orthodox deacon in the area and to consecrate the church’s new altar table.
Duane “Elijah” Adkins will be ordained as a deacon. He is a convert to the Orthodox faith.
The altar table, a 42-inch cube to symbolize the perfection of faith, will be sealed with a bone of a saint inside.
The day’s schedule will include matins, the morning service, at 8 a.m.; the altar consecration at 9 a.m.; ordination to minor orders at 10 a.m.; the divine liturgy and the ordination.

International marketplace
First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., is hosting the 16th annual Jubilee International Marketplace today from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Over the past 16 years, the church has raised more than $250,000 through the sale to benefit local and global communities. The money has helped children go to school, see the dentist or the doctor, and improve their nutrition, and it has helped reduce poverty in many communities.
Many of the items for sale will directly benefit the people who made the items and their families.
Items include Mata Ortiz pottery, needlework, clothing, instruments, candles and jewelry.
There also will be alternative gifts for sale that can be given in memory or in honor of a loved one. The proceeds from these gifts will benefit the Heifer Project, Anuak Ministries and other charitable organizations.

Thanksgiving dinners
•Sodexho Campus Services, Gonzaga University and St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church are offering a free community Thanksgiving dinner Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall at the corner of Boone and Astor.
Volunteers are needed for this event.

•The Center of Light Church is hosting a free Thanksgiving Day meal Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Lake City Senior Center, 1916 Lakewood Drive, Coeur d’Alene.
The meal will include dessert and music. Anyone needing transportation should make arrangements in advance.
The church also is looking for donations of food or money to contribute to this meal.

Thanksgiving concert
Audubon Park United Methodist Church, 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd., is presenting the Choir of the Crown of Thorns Sunday at 7 p.m.
The interdenominational group is also looking for anyone who would like to join the choir for the concert. There will be rehearsals before the event.

Thanksgiving service
Metaline Falls Congregational United Church of Christ will conduct its annual Thanksgiving prayer service Wednesdayat 7 p.m. at the church, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Grandview in Metaline Falls, Wash.

‘The Velveteen Rabbit’
Christian Youth Theater-Spokane is presenting the organization’s first nonmusical play today and Sunday at its new theater, 708 W. Nora Ave. The theater previously was on the Life Center campus.
The play, “The Velveteen Rabbit,” is part of the troupe’s Page to Stage program which takes classic literature from the Spokane Public Schools approved reading list and puts it on stage.
Performances will be today at 3 and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
Tickets tonight and Sunday are $8 for adults, $7 for children and seniors. All tickets for today’s matinee are $5.

Taize prayer service
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., is presenting an ecumenical Taize prayer service Sunday at 7 p.m.
The candlelight service includes Scripture readings, prayers, simple chants and time for reflection.
