Eastern drops Big Sky final
Atlee Hubbard had 20 kills as top-seeded Sacramento State (25-7) won its fourth consecutive Big Sky conference volleyball title with a 24-30, 30-23, 30-26, 30-22 victory over third-seeded Eastern Washington on Saturday night in Sacramento, Calif.
Ashley Jensen led the Eagles (23-9) with 16 kills, and Lizzy Mellor (Colfax) had 11 kills and 11 digs in the sixth consecutive conference championship meeting between the two teams. Kerri Beck added eight kills and eight total blocks.
•Freshman Haley Larsen set a school record with 36 kills and Saxony Brown had 81 assists as Idaho defeated San Jose State 30-23, 31-29, 22-30, 32-34, 15-13 in a Western Athletic Conference match at Memorial Gym in Moscow.
Amanda Bowman had 19 kills and Erin Curtis added 16 kills and five blocks for the Vandals, who finish their regular season 16-13, 8-8. Jennifer Senftleben (28 kills, 15 digs) and Niki Clement (25 kills, 17 digs) led the Spartans (12-16, 7-9).
•Emily Day had 17 kills and Erin Downey added 16 as Loyola Marymount (19-9, 7-7) defeated Gonzaga 30-23, 18-30, 30-24, 30-18 in a West Coast Conference match on Senior Night at the Martin Centre.
Lacey Bell had 12 kills and eight digs and Jessica Herrera had 18 digs in their final match for Gonzaga (10-21, 2-12). Becky Jones led the Bulldogs with 19 kills.
Wrestling
North Idaho College wrestlers Heinrich Barnes and Jake Kallestad won their weight classes at the Best of the West tournament in Ashland, Ore.
Barnes went 5-0 to earn the victory at 141 pounds, defeating Skyler Woods of Oregon 9-4 in the championship. Kallestad went 4-0 on the day, pinning Oregon’s Shaun Dee at 1:57 to win the 197 title.
Jeff Hedges finished third at 125 for the Cardinals, while Cody Nicholson (133) and Jake Friedman (157) placed fourth in their respective divisions. Josh Edmondson (Medical Lake) won one match at 184, then defaulted his quarterfinal match due to a rib injury.
Cross country
Three Whitworth Pirates participated in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Delaware, Ohio.
Senior Kristi Dickey finished 42nd in the women’s race, covering the 6K course in 23 minutes, 11.9 seconds to earn her best finish in three NCAA appearances.
Junior Julie Lauterbach (23:30.5) finished 65th in her NCAA debut.
On the men’s side, senior Doug Blackburn finished 45th, covering eight kilometers in 26:42.3.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse earned its second men’s championship, while Geneseo State won the women’s title.
