Former Redskin Smith arrested

Associated Press

Timmy Smith, who set a Super Bowl rushing record when he played for the Washington Redskins in 1988, has been arrested in Denver after allegedly trying to sell cocaine to an undercover drug agent.

Smith, 41, and his brother Chris were in custody and due in court Monday, U.S. attorney’s spokesman Jeff Dorschner said Friday. They could face charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine.

“It doesn’t matter how famous you are, what sport you play or what records you hold,” said Jeffrey D. Sweetin, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Rocky Mountain Division. “The American people will not tolerate such disregard for the law, and neither will the DEA.”

Authorities said the investigation has resulted in the seizure of about 2.8 pounds of cocaine and unspecified assets worth about $100,000.

Search warrants were executed on houses in Denver and suburban Lakewood, Colo., authorities said.

Smith rushed for a Super Bowl-record 204 yards and two touchdowns in the Redskins’ 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in 1988. He gained weight the following season and never performed at the same level. He last played in the NFL in 1990 with the Dallas Cowboys.

•Former NFL player Bob Buczkowski was charged with running a prostitution ring in Monroeville, Pa., with his girlfriend.

Buczkowski and Amy Schifano were arrested on drug, prostitution, corrupt organization and other charges. They face a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Buczkowski, a 41-year-old former defensive lineman at Pittsburgh, played in the NFL for three years, beginning in 1987. He made appearances for the Raiders and Cardinals before playing 15 games for Cleveland in 1990. He was hampered by back problems and cut by Seattle in 1991.

Seahawks’ Jackson ails

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Darrell Jackson missed practice after experiencing soreness in his right knee.

Jackson was added to the injury report as probable for Sunday’s game at Washington, but he is expected to play.

Seattle held practice with just three healthy receivers on the active roster: Bobby Engram, D.J. Hackett and Joe Jurevicius. Peter Warrick is questionable with a left groin injury, and hasn’t practiced all week.

Cornerback Kelly Herndon also returned to practice after suffering a neck stinger in last week’s win over Arizona. He is expected to play Sunday.

Niners, Cardinals to make history

When the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals step onto the turf of Mexico’s giant Azteca Stadium on Sunday in Mexico City, they’ll be making NFL history: It’ll be the first regular-season game played outside the U.S. in the league’s 86-year history.

More than 90,000 fans are expected to attend the game.

Around the league

St. Louis coach Mike Martz was hospitalized with a sinus infection, but the team expects him to be able to coach Sunday when the Rams play at the New York Giants. … The Philadelphia Eagles signed kicker Todd France off the practice squad to replace injured Pro Bowler David Akers, who is out with a torn hamstring.
