Several area residents have earned scholarships for the 2005-06 school year at Eastern Washington University.

Esther Donaldson, Spokane, has been awarded a $2,500 Transfer Academic Honors Scholarship. Donaldson, the daughter of Cheryl Bratton of Spokane and Hiram Dukes, attended high school in Spangle before earning her GED from Spokane Falls Community College in 1994. She is studying government.

Rebecca Long of Greenacres has been awarded a $500 Steiner Family Scholarship. Long, a home-school student who attended Running Start classes at Spokane Community College, is the daughter of Mary and Larry Long of Greenacres. She is studying computer science.

Katharine Lux, Spokane Valley, has been awarded a $2,500 Scholastic Honors Scholarship. Lux, who is studying nursing, is a 2005 graduate of Immanuel Lutheran High School in Eau Claire, Wis. She is the daughter of Linda and Dennis Lux of Spokane.

John Michel, Spokane, has been awarded a $1,000 Chatburn Graduate Scholarship. Michel, a graduate student studying school counseling psychology, is the son of Elinor Michel of Moscow, Idaho, and Cliff Michel of Corvallis, Ore.

Heather Wisswell, Spokane, has been awarded a $2,000 Woodrow Van Fradenberg Scholarship. Wisswell, a 2005 graduate of Vanden High School in Fairfield, Calif., is the daughter of Lisa and Clark Wisswell of Fairchild Air Force Base. She is studying music education.

• Two members of the Gonzaga University debate team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Jesuit Invitation Debates held at Gonzaga in September. The team included senior Charlie Hutchison of Tucson, Ariz., and sophomore Nick Bormann of Spokane.

The invitational included 49 teams representing 19 colleges and universities. In addition, Hutchison placed eighth overall individual speaker in a field of 98.

• Air Force Airman Courtnie Lambert recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Lambert, a 2003 graduate of Lake Roosevelt High School in Coulee Dam, is the daughter of Robert and Lisa Lambert of Grand Coulee.

• Army Spec. Keith Bailey recently graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Ga.

Bailey is a 1995 graduate of Mead High School and a 2000 graduate of Eastern Washington University.

• Several area high school students have been named Commended Students in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program. The awards are given to students who place in the top five percent of students who entered the competition. Students are listed by high school.
