Eastern rallies to beat Montana St.
Lizzy Mellor (Colfax High) had 26 kills to lead Eastern Washington from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Montana State (8-9, 2-2) in five games in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Friday at Bozeman, Mont.
Christina Albers led the Eagles (11-5, 3-2) with 47 assists and added 12 digs, while Addie Webster had 13 kills and 15 digs.
•Crystal Matich had 49 assists and six aces as 14th-ranked Santa Clara (14-1, 3-0) swept Gonzaga 30-20, 30-18, 30-19 in a West Coast Conference match at Santa Clara, Calif. Becky Jones led the Zags (9-9, 1-1) with 12 kills. Heather Dunn had 29 assists.
•Kristin Richards had 20 kills and hit .605 to lead third-ranked Stanford to a 30-12, 30-16, 30-24 sweep of Washington State in Pac-10 play at Stanford, Calif. Jen Barcus (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls) led the Cougars with seven kills and five blocks.
•Natalie Danielson had 17 kills and four blocks to lead 23rd-ranked Whitworth (12-2, 8-0) to a four-game victory over Willamette (1-10, 1-6) in Northwest Conference play at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Rebekah Hornor had 37 assists and Brittney Bower 13 digs for the Pirates.
Women’s soccer
Eastern Washington struck first, but had its offense stall in a 1-all tie with Sacramento State (3-6-3, 0-0-1) in a Big Sky Conference match at Sacramento, Calif.
Kerstyn Dolack scored for the Eagles (3-7-3, 1-0-1) in the second minute with an 18-yard shot inside the far post.
•Shari Summers scored in the 70th minute to lead Stanford (7-3-1) to a 1-0 victory over Washington State (7-4-1) in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams at Stanford, Calif.
•Despite a combined 32 shots, Whitworth and Whitman (5-3-2, 3-2-2) played to a scoreless tie in a Northwest Conference match at Whitworth. Jenn Miller recorded five saves for the Pirates (3-4-3, 2-3-2).
•Alexis DeLeo scored Community Colleges of Spokane’s first two goals in a 4-1 win over Columbia Basin (3-6-2, 2-6-2) in NWAACC play at Pasco. Steffannii Johnson and Elizabeth Phillips also scored for CCS (10-2-3, 6-1-3).
Men’s soccer
Chris Johnson and Todd Sabrowski each scored their fifth goals of the season as Whitworth defeated visiting Whitman (4-7, 3-4) 3-1 in a Northwest Conference match.
Skye Henderson scored the first goal for the Pirates (9-1-1, 6-0-1) in the 14th minute. Ali Seyedali added two assists.
•Kevin Bourland (Mead) scored in the 81st minute to give CC Spokane (5-7-3, 5-3-2) a 1-0 win over host Columbia Basin (2-10, 2-8) in NWAACC play at Pasco.
Hockey
Lief Scherman scored for the Spokane Braves in a 4-1 loss at Nelson (British Columbia). Ryan Skier had 31 saves.
