Quick kicks

The Spokesman-Review

The clock showed noon when the opening kickoff cut through the autumn air on Northwestern College’s cozy, leafy campus in St. Paul, Minn.

The cloudless conditions were so nice, well, they could’ve played twice. And that’s exactly what the Eagles did.

After beating Trinity Bible College 59-0 on Saturday to boost its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference record to 4-0, Northwestern took a two-hour break before a 6 1/2 -mile bus ride down Snelling Avenue – where a 7 p.m. nonconference contest against Macalester College awaited.

Northwestern, a nondenominational Christian school with about 2,600 students enrolled, was having trouble finding a 10th opponent without drastically extending the season or busting the travel budget when the two-games-in-one-day idea was raised. It was OK with the NCAA, and the proximity to Macalester Stadium made the Scots a good fit. Plus, the first-known doubleheader in modern college football history was sure to generate some publicity. The Eagles beat Macalester 47-14.

Small college stars

Miles Austin, Monmouth, caught 10 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-14 win over Sacred Heart. … Obozua Ehikioya, Marist, ran for 253 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-0 rout of La Salle. … Elijah Brooks, William & Mary, ran for 135 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-10 win over New Hampshire.

Road to recovery

Baylor won a Big 12 road game for the first time in the league’s 10-year history, beating Iowa State 23-13. The Bears had been 0-37 on the road in the Big 12 and had lost 38 straight conference games overall away from home. Their last league victory on the road was a 48-7 win over SMU on Nov. 11, 1995, in the Southwest Conference.

Milestones

Nick Hartigan broke Brown’s career rushing record and the Bears beat Fordham 37-14. Hartigan ran for 124 yards and one TD on 28 carries, increasing his career total to 3,347 yards and surpassing the mark of 3,266 set by Michael Malan from 1999-2001. Hartigan’s TD gave him 39 for his career, which tied Malan’s school record. … Jovon Bouknight‘s 16-yard catch in the first quarter of a 28-14 loss to TCU moved him past Marcus Harris into first place on Wyoming’s career all-purpose yards list with 4,861.
