Fall-weather friends

Sam Mazzotta King Features Syndicate

As the weather changes, it’s fun to take our furry companions out for a romp in the autumn leaves and enjoy the cooler weather. And while temperatures are probably a lot more bearable now for you and your dog or cat, there are still a few things to keep in mind.

• Fleas and ticks can still be a problem in October, especially in warmer areas of the country where the leaves have only just begun to change. Check pets (and yourself) for ticks after every outdoor walk, and continue to treat pets with flea repellents until cold weather sets in.

•Pay attention to older pets as the weather changes. Senior dogs and cats can suffer from arthritis just as humans do, and the sudden dips and rises in fall temperatures can cause painful, stiff joints. On cool days, a gentle rubdown — especially around your pet’s larger joints — may be appreciated, as will a pet sweater or blanket. If your pet seems really uncomfortable, visit the veterinarian to explore treatment options.

•In areas of the country that get especially cold, October is an ideal time to head to the pet store and look for items that will help your pet get through winter — booties to protect a dog’s paws on icy sidewalks, blankets that fasten snugly around your pet, extra toys for “inside” days. Pick up what you need now, make sure it fits and that it “works” for your pet, and make any returns or exchanges before the snow flies.

•Finally, make sure your pets stay healthy through the change of seasons. Take them in for an annual checkup if it’s getting near that time, and stock up on supplements and nutritious treats to give them lots of strength and energy.
