Vandal women drop 12th straight

Kim Silos scored two goals to lead 25th-ranked Long Beach State to a 2-0 win over Idaho in a non-conference women’s soccer match Tuesday at Long Beach, Calif.

The Vandals (2-14) tied a school record with their 12th straight loss, and they have failed to score in their last six. The 49ers (11-3-1) set a season record with their eighth shutout.

Volleyball

Lizzy Mellor (Colfax High) had 21 kills and Ashley Jensen added 11 kills and seven blocks as Eastern Washington (14-6) swept Gonzaga 30-23, 30-20, 30-16 in a non-league match at Reese Court in Cheney.

Christina Albers ran the potent Eagles offense with 42 assists, while Becky Jones had nine kills and nine digs to lead the Bulldogs (10-12), who have lost 13 straight to Eastern.

•Whitworth outside hitter Julie Marsh (Cheney) is the NWC player of the week after leading the Pirates to three wins, hitting .419 at the net with 39 kills.

Football

Quarterback Joel Clark (Mt. Spokane) of Whitworth was chosen the Northwest Conference player of the week and defensive back Jay Tully (Mead) was named the top defensive player. Clark completed 24 of 32 passes for 363 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 76 yards with another touchdown in a victory over the University of Puget Sound.

Tully had 12 tackles and intercepted a pass in the end zone.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth’s Ali Seyedali and Adam Loeffler were NWC offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively.
