NEA football teams begin league play Friday with Newport (1-2) visiting Freeman (2-1), and Kettle Falls (2-2) entertaining Colfax (2-1). Freeman seniors Michael Wittwer and Andrew Wilkerson are off to quick starts, Wilkerson with three touchdowns in three games and Wittwer with four. But they’re both chasing Tanner Bircher of Kettle Falls. Bircher, a senior wide receiver/defensive back, has five scores – three receiving, one rushing and a fumble return.
